It really depends upon what you are looking for. Are you wanting to go the "classical" route with a sidelock percussion or flintlock or are you looking at the modern in-lines?

If you're the &quot;sidewinder&quot; type, Lyman makes a couple of excellent models to choose from. If you want to go with the modern in-lines............well the sky is the limit! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

All the major manufacturers make some quality in-line shootin' irons. There are many models from makes like CVA, Thompson Center, Traditions, Knight (my personal favorite), Remington, White, Austin/Hallock, White, Markesbury, and Savage even has a model that shoots regular smokeless powder. And just about any of these will serve you well for a number of years.

Everybody has there own personal favorites. My advice would be to read the answers you get here and then go to a shop and handle all the weapons that you can. To be honest, feel and trust in a particular brand - may be the best deciding factor you will find.

well what do you want to shoot???? Flint, sidelock, In-Line???? I really like T/C, but there is others that are as good...Go to a gun shop and ask about all these and keep in mind of the State you want to hunt mostly... Take PA... muzzleloading season you have to use a FlintLock at .50cal round ball ONLY...Also are you going to use a scope??? Check the Laws out in Every State you plane to Hunt...

Yes, PA requires a flintlock during muzzleloading season, but it doesn't have to be a .50 cal. Also, right now, they let you use conicals as well as round balls, although that may change again before next ML season.

PA does require a FLINTLOCK. You must use a min. .45cal. You are not allowed scopes, But you can use Fiber optic INSERT on your IRON sights. Also you are allowed to use conical style,sabots, and roundballs. Each year they come out with new Regs. so be sure to check your PA hunting book before heading out. PA flintlock hunter for the pAst 5 years. By the way I recommend the PA Hunter oct. to round barrell style (1:66 twist) reliable and accurate, not the carbine Pa hunter, that is the new style one. It might be great it just seems like a waste to pay more for a less accurate MZLDR'

I posed this same question on several boards and 9 times out of 10 I was told to get the Encore. I know thats what my mind is set on for next year. Heck, that'll probably be the last gun I get for awhile since I can change the barrels and make it any caliber I want.

If you buy the T/C Encore you will NEVER be sorry or out gunned.
The 209x50 is absolutely the last muzzle loader you will ever need to buy, As it tis the finest muzzle loader ever made. And ohh, did I mention the most accurate!<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I would check out the NEF muzzleloader....Lots cheaper than the Encore with most of the features.
