Now my question,

Do any of you use a leather sling made in the traditional way attached to the stock via a leather sleeve/butt pad combo? It attaches around the muzzle with a leather strap only. No metal hardware at all, just leather lacing to hold it together.

I was thinking of making one from some scrap leather I have for the traditional look. Any advice on construction or tips?

thought about it...but didnt want to cover my patch box.....soooo i bought the thimble that takes the sling swivel stud and drilled my stock for the other end....doesnt look so traditional....but neither do the fiberoptic sites i put on it.....im after something functional and something that works....my gun still looks good....i do want a leather sling for it....just to make it look better.....cant wait to get together with the guys and show it off next year.....we all had the same TC hawken flinters last year....i did so much work to mine they will think its a new gun....cant wait......

I'm a modern hunter using a traditional ignition. My Traditions Deerhunter Flintlock has a synthetic stock and fiber optic sights. I use Triple 7 and powerbelts. It's also the lightest gun I own and the one I shoot the most.

I'm a lean, mean, deer hunting machine, but weigh in about 270 lbs so I'm not that lean, and not that mean either.

I love hunting when no one else is in the woods, but me and bamdi's mom or dad.

I made my own leather boot for the stock of my CVA Mountain Stalker and then padded inside the boot so the recoil was not so brutal when shooting stiff loads. I could have just as easy left one end longer and had a sling attached there, but I didn't. Instead I cover the leather boot with a black wool sock. When the sock is dirty, I wash it. It covers and holds the boot in place, and also matches the composte stock of the rifle while taking the recoil out of the stiff loads.

Go ahead and make the boot. If your not happy with it, then don't show it off... Actually the traditional way to carry the rifle was in a wool gun sock (full length). This was done to protect the rifle and the charge in the rifle. Some of those gun socks did have carry slings. Sure would slow a fellow down if he needed his rifle in a hurry.
