home made bench rest

I was going to build a shooters table but decided I wanted something more portable. I took a jack I bought at a garage sale for $3.00 some scrap 2X2 lumber, a chunk of water pipe insulation and a 1X6 and put this together. I have an old leather belt I am going to attach in the back as a recoil catcher, and the blocks inside the holding envelope keep the stock nice and solid.
You can adjust the elevation of the sight plane using the jack, and the platform is on a simple singe lag bolt so you can move the stand side to side. The back stock arms are custom made to fit me and the way I hold a rifle. Actually once your on target, you just need to slide in behind the rifle, make sure it is sighted, and then touch it off. I want to try some different loads out of the T/C Black Diamond XR at long ranges...

Oooh... I've been wanting to do something like that. Awesome man! Effective and cheap. That's what I like!
I bet the weight of the jack helps to keep it stable too.
You could probably zip-tie the forearm of the rifle to the jack if there is any bounce. Is the jack bolted down?

The pivot bolt on the right/left arm that comes up through the base is run through the bottom of the jack it self. I then brought out a big washer to hold the jack down there and a wing nut so the whole thing comes apart for easy packing in and out from the range. So yes the jack is kind of bolted down. But your right, the weight of the jack is really all you need. I just went the extra because that way it can not tip over with one of my rifles on it. I figure I might have $5.00 in the whole thing. And that jack that was always in my way everytime I looked for something in the garage is now put to good use.
I was thinking in the one blind I use on my property, I could pack that out the day before and have a nice solid rest to do my shooting off of when them critters come sneaking up the trail towards the field to feed.
Does that sound fair?

I so far am very impressed with it. Being the jack is a screw kind VS a climbing jack, I can fine tune this going up or down in very small amounts. I was shooting the other day off it, and it was working better then the one I used to shoot off of at my friends. He paid $89.00 for his, and I like mine better. Of course mine is custom fitted to me, so that might have a lot to do with it.

cayugad,
I was so impressed with the ingenuity of the idea that when I was out shooting the other day, I pulled the jack out from behind the seat of my truck and used it insted of the 1 foot piece of railroad track I had been using. It performed flawlessly. I am going to the junkyard to get one and mount it on a piece of heavy board. I use a 45 degree angled cut piece of 4 x 4 block about 8 inches long for the buttstock rest. It can me moved in or out for fine elevation adjustments.

I thought of making mine out of the 4X4 post but wanted to keep the weight down. Your right though, kind of cool how you can tune that rifle up just a hair and still keep the target in the sight... I figure it is better then spend $89.00 for that plastic thing my friend has.

Glad you liked the idea too....
