What type of flint will give me the most spark
I don't do a lot of shooting with a flintlock, and I'm interested in what type of flint will give me the most spark. I'm using agate now and I don't think it really throws a lot a spark.

Funny....in my T/C Flintlock I use premium Agate flints very successfully......I honest to god haven't had a misfire in the last 4 years.
In fact I get that much spark off of them that I'm practically lighting my pants on fire while adjusting them.....looks like fireworks.
One little tip.......get yourself a small can of CRC "Electronic" spray cleaner.....spray your frizzen with this and wipe with a clean dry paper towel It dries VERY quickly. The stuff removes any and all grease, film or fingerprints which are detrimental to you getting a good spark.

Briman,
The traditional muzzleloading group on another board is getting ready to do another bulk buy on Tom Fuller flints.
You should be able to get information from October Country Muzzleloading Inc. in Idaho. They have a web site.

Just a little tip. I have found that you get what you pay for when it comes to Flints. The PREMIUM agate flints are , In my opinion, the best ones. Although they are a little tough on the frizzen but I have been using the same Frizzen for about 4 or 5 yrs and the premium agte flints and I have not had to change anything. I have had several of the T/C traditions and they break quite easily. I bought most of My flints from a company in State College...RMC. If you would want more info. on that company I can get it for you. They were at the Eastern Outdoor and Sport Show in Harrisburg. (One of the largest shows in the Country for hunting, fishing, and the outdoors). <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I bought a pack of traditions agate flints because they were the only thing available in stores in my area. The flints seem to be very expensive at something like $11 for 2 or 3 of them. This really concerned me as I read somewhere that you can expect to get about a dozen good reliable shots out of a flint. The flints seem like they shoul be a bit longer as the best I can position them hits the frizzen about 1/2 way up.
I don't have my rifle kit completed yet, but I put a flint in the lock just to try it out. I occasionally snap the lock a few times and occasionally put a small priming change of 4f in the pan to see it will go off. Amazingly enough, I still haven't changed the original flint, though I've repositioned it laterally a few times to wear the frizzen evenly, and it has never failed to spark or set off a priming charge even after setting if off somewhere around 50 times.

I also use agates in my smokepole with no problems and they hold up well. It's like cooking ,use the best ingediants and get the best results.
I always change to a new flint for the hunting season and never had a problem.
