Default Triple Seven (777) Magnum loads??

I am shooting a CVA Magnum 150 designed to handle 150 grain loads. I decided to try the new triple seven from hodgdon. The litrature inside the box of pellets says never to exceed 100 grains of triple seven.

I understand that the 777 is a little hotter than pyrodex but will 100 grains push a 295 grain hollow point to 100 yds with good accuracy? Has anyone shot 150 grain loads of 777?

thanks

I shoot Triple Se7en but I use loose powder. I do not shoot a magnum rifle. Never really saw the need for one. I shoot my .54 caliber with 85 grains of loose T-7 and it has all the power I need to take a deer off their feet. I have never shot out to 100 yards with it yet, but was shooting targets in the yard at 70 yards with great results. I took three deer with it this year, and one deer at 60 steps never moved. She was hit with a roundball, and it took her right off her feet. So 100 grains of the stuff would have a lot of power to it... Good luck with your rifle.

I know loose 777 is ~15% hotter than equivalent BP or Pyrodex loads, but I thought I had heard 777 pellets didn' t have much if any velocity benefits over Pyrodex pellets. Is this correct? And if loose 777 is 15% hotter, why couldn' t you use 120 grain 777 loads in place of 150 grain BP magnum loads, or is that 100 grain restriction just for pellets because they only come in 50 grains. That would be decreasing the load by 20%, so you should still be within comparable pressures or am I getting confused. That happens from time to time.

Hodgdon' s maximum is 100 grains loose powder in Triple 7. CVA' s published maximum is 100 grains of loose powder, period.

If you want to shoot more than 100 grains of loose powder, you need a stronger action from a company that specifically allows it. A Knight Elite / Extreme or the more economical Wolverine gets you there.

Lobi,

I too have a CVA, a CVA Firebolt Ultra Magnum 50 calibur and I was shooting the 295 grain PB aerotip with 150 grains or 3 pellets and it was accurate out to 100 yards. But then I saw Randy' s note so I decided to swith to 100 grains and I changed the bullet to the TC Shockwave, 250 grain. The bullet is a little harder to load than the PB but I' m getting nice grouping at 100 yards and the TC is cheaper than PB.

I would shoot 100 grains versus 150 and shoot safely.

Thanks Randy....

Randy,
Just curious, but where is it listed that the max load for loose 777 is 100 grains? I shoot 90 grains now and may drop to 80, so it doesn't affect me other than to quench my thirst for knowledge. I searched Hodgdon's website and looked over my bottle of powder, and I don't see a 100 grain limit mentioned anywhere. As a matter of fact they give loading data for 120 grains using several popular bullet weights. All that is mentioned on their website is to shoot 15% lighter loads than the max for BP when using loose 777.

I shoot 150 grains of 777,with a 50 cal, 240 grain Hornady bullet out of a Remington 700 ML.I've shot it around 30 - 35 times so far with no problems, besides for a noticeable "double" bang.

I shoot the 777 pellets. Your right in that the literature that comes with the pellets says not to exceed 100 grains. It also states that some rifle manufactures say you can shoot over that. My owners manual that came with my T/C Encore says I can use three pellets or 150 grains safely in my gun. The gunsmith where I bought it said it was safe and to make sure I was on good terms with my dentist as it would knock my fillings loose. I've shot it about 10 times with the 150 grain load of 777, but he was right. Jars the snot out of ya! I settled on the 100 grains for now. If I go out west or hunt the plains I may re-sight with 3 pellets but for now, I'll stick with the 2 pellets. This is probably clear as mud now, but I thought I'd add my two cents.

The 777 isn't any more powerful out of my gun.It shoots right around 2200 through the chrono with 150 grns of either and a 240 grn XTP bullet. But it does clean a lot better.
