Default 600 Yard Sidelock “HOTROD” Renegade (Open sights)

I Decided to drag the Ole the 1-18 Twist Sidelock (The Business Rifle) Out and show it some love this Morning This is the Barrel That Idahoron Gifted me. This was the Exact same spot as i just Shot my Knight Mountaineer the other day, Right on 600 Yards. This Target was REALLY REALLY Difficult for me to See with my Naked eye, looking through the Peep helped, But even then i could Barely make it out. I wish i had been better prepared this morning with a Solid Color Backstop so i could have Repeated a Sight picture easier, This was EXTREMELY TOUGH!! Remember, an Official 600 Yard Open Sight Target has a Black Aiming Bull of 36 inches, My Gong Aiming bull is only 9 inches here!! I was stil able to get all 3 Hits on Target, They were to the Right of the Bull and in a Vertical String, measuring 14 inches. For the EXTREME POOR visibility Conditions i was Happy with ANY Hit on the Gong. I need to get back out with an OFFICIAL target and Shoot a Group, I was going for Video footage this morning, Shooting a Paper Target doesn’t make for fun Video

For Comparison, Here is a Quick Vid Clip of me Zoomed in on an OFFICIAL 600 Yard Open Sight Target (MR-1C) The Black Aiming Bull is 36 inches, This is what the Competition Shooters are Shooting at When competing at 600 Yards. The Black Aiming Bull on my 20” Square Gong is only 9 inches, GIANT Difference!! I wish i had Zoomed out here so you could See it all the way out, This was me getting Dialed in for my Gong

I forgot to mention my Gong, It is a 20 inch Square piece of 1/2” inch Thick AR500 Steel, This thing weighs 60 Something pounds! I really wish i had went with the 3/8” Stuff, I would have gotten more Swing, and a Better “Ring” out of it.

"I can't see that far!" Is the cliche response here.

But I think in this situation at least it's true for me.

600 yards through a peep would be difficult for me. Having a solid color back stop would help.

If the Rifle/Load is Accurate, and in the right hands, It is AMAZING what a guy can do with Open/Peep sights! Especially on Official Size Open Sight Targets, Target size changes at each Distance. The Black Aiming Bull for the 800-1,000 Yard Target is 44 inches and comes in 2 pieces (i have them). My eye sight is my Problem. I cut my Right eye REALLY bad Many years ago in a Logging Accident, My eyeball actually Deflated, The Cornea of my Right eye had to be Stitched. My eyesight has never been the Same since, and obviously as i age it continually gets worse and worse. This is why i bought the inline Muzzleloader, and Nice Scope to sit on it. It is inevitable that I’m gonna come to an End with being able to See These Long Range Targets with my Naked Eye, Yesterday’s session was EXTREMELY difficult on me.

As for challenge, Doing this with my new Knight Mountaineer and Scope was EASY, and that was with my little Gong. The Sidelock on the other Hand with Open/Peep Sights is FAR FAR and AWAY more Challenging, it can’t Closely be compared!! I feel like ANY decent Shooter can do this with a Properly Setup inline, BUT Take those SAME Guy’s that are REALLY good with the Scoped inlines and put them Behind a Sidelock with Open/Peep sights at Long Range and See how they do? I Would wager a Bet that the VAST Majority of them Fella’s would be HUMBLED, BIG TIME from Guy’s like Dave Gullo, and Lee Shaver’s!! It is 2 VERY Different Worlds (Open Sight vs Scoped) I consider guy’s like Shaver’s and Gullo the “ELITE”, And when i think “Pros” They are who come to my mind.

Here is Dave Gullo (Buffalo Arms Owner) With Peep Sights, Except his Target is over 1,100 Yards here!! I see Dave on a Fairly Regular Basis, i am in Buffalo Arms WAY more than I should be Dave has been a BIG Help to me, REALLY Good Guy!!

You cant imagine how good that makes me feel to hear that barrel ringing steel at 600 yards. That was what that barrel was made to do. I just didn't have time to ever tackle it. Great Job!!

Thank you my Brother! This Barrel is DEFINITELY 1 of my Prize possessions!! I sure wish i had my Youth Eyesight back for this Thing! 600 Yards on This 20” Steel Plate is my Limit, actually it was Beyond my limit, as i was REALLY STRUGGLING to see it. The good part is i can See the BIG Official Open Sight Targets for these LOOOOOONG Yardages Fine, i can get a good repeatable Sight picture on them. It will be fun to get out to 850 and See what happens there? I am waiting for people to Clear out of that particular Spot. I feel REALLY GOOD about it on the BIG Official Targets.

I don’t know how much more time i have with my Eyesight and This kind of Loooong Range Open Sight Shooting? This is really why I bought the New Knight Mountaineer inline, and Put a Good Quality Scope on it, So i can continue enjoying the Sport when my Eyes finally say NO WAY JOSE with Open sights. When the time comes that i start to Struggle Seeing the BIG OFFICIAL Targets, I would like to Give this Barrel To your Son Jacob. I have taken Meticulous care of her, She Shoots STELLAR!! Just needs a Driver that can See the Rd ahead, Jacob can NO DOUBT Drive this thing!

I just love it that its out again. I am so busy lately that I can't do much. I quit my Job at the feed mill. I was there for 35 years, and when I had my surgery on my ankle I knew I could not go back. I am now working as the Sexton at the local Cemetery. I was hoping for a more relaxed environment. It kind of is, but it is so run down it takes a lot of work.
