It wouldn't work for reason 1: WAY to light in weight. 2: It's designed for extremely fast expansion on a HUMAN target. Just imagine how it would expand on an Elk hide or even a whitetail! With that light weight coupled with explosive expansion all you will end up with is a pretty severe surface wound with no vitals penetration.

I'd give their 145gr Controlled Chaos as well as the 165gr a look...Both would probably be sufficient. I only have experience with their ML bullets and those Xtreme penetrator bullets in my .458 SOCOM. I know the tech works outstandingly well in both of those. But with the smaller dimensions of the .308 in both weight and size I just don't know if I would 100% trust it on Elk sized game. He doesn't seem to focus all that much energy towards hunting bullets. More so towards his military lines and personal defense.

One really nice thing about a Savage. Its not too terribly hard to make them into a switch barrel platform. You can even buy a 209 head for that bolt for about $80.

All you need is the wrench and a set of go/no go gauges. Although that barrel nut is different.

Tom, I am thinking you have the scope bases mounted in-correctly?

This is the way most are mounted to give you a wider range of scope movement and less interference with the cartridge.

That would not surprise me at all. I did not put them on. The place I bought it did.

And as far as running game, I know people do it. But not me, just no reason in my mind to ever do it. I guess that's why I never like driving Deer.
Grouse - I probably had about 1000 or so rounds through that rifle before I ever took it hunting so I was familiar with it. I agree it is a good design and one of the reasons I bought it. But shooting at the range and hunting with several rifle models the fact that this trigger had a lot of "take up" before actual applying pressure for firing was something that was lost in the heat of the moment and the reason I traded the rifle in. I know that my shot impacted well behind the buck and I didn't want it to happen again.
As for shooting running game - no, its not for everyone. But I do it because I know I can and I know my limitations. Within 50 yards in fairly open woods is no problem at all.

Sabot that wood stocked/blued version looks a lot more pleasing to the eye than the synthetic stocked/SS one. The SS one is definitely more corrosion resistant and lighter but I like the wood/blued. I also like the way the Savage rifles shoot. Hard to find one that isn't accurate.
