The off season - Time to shoot birds
It has been a terribly long time since hunting season ended, even though it was just last month. Anyway I needed to get some shooting in for sanity reasons...
Also I had just shimmed up a new bare prime breech plug for my 45 cal. Super DISC and I really wanted to check that job out. I will say I set this one up a little bit light... in that I made it so the primer had very little to no crush at all on the primer shelf. I really felt if I was with .005" of the shelf the primer would grow enough to take that space up when it was fired. It did not go as planned. I was getting blow back up the side wall of the primer after shooting. I almost stopped shooting and went back to the house to add a shim... but I stayed and completed the rest of the planned shoot.
The load I was shooting was scheduled to be my deer hunting load for the season... 120 gr. - volume - of T7-2f, W209 primer, Lehigh 40x215CF bullet packed in a MMP Tan sabot. This load had shot really for me in the fall while testing the bullet, unfortunately I was unable to apply it to a deer during the season. I passed on to many does looking for the nice buck and then by the time we decided to shoot does the Blue Tongue disease had really done its thing in the we were hunting so I really never got the chance to apply it to an animal.
Headed to the farm this after for the shoot figuring this is a great time to shoot birds in the snow. You can set the bird in the snow standing up and the contrast of the orange bird and the white snow makes for an excellent target. I set birds up at 50, 100, and 150 yards. Set up for loading and shooting a began the shoot. Other the dirty primers and a few that stuck in the primer rails of the bolt - the shooting went great. Oh, I should mention I am using a Lehigh Mountaineer/ULite bolt in the Super DISC. The reason primers were sticking a little bit was because of the blow back that was collecting in the face of the bolt, it was not primers backing into the bolt face. Tonight when I clean the rifle I will add another .005" shim to the breech plug to cure my problem.

Look at the 100 yard birds... my first two shots took the center of the birds out... and the third shot which I really wanted to score a trio - well it busted the dang bird! I really tried to get the same 6:00 hold on it as I had the other two.
Time to clean!
