Default Buck With a Patched Round Ball

Today was the second day of Ft. Sill conventional muzzleloading deer season. Beat the brush for several hours before settling in a stand overlooking a pond that deer had been frequenting.

At about 19:15 i heard an animal drinking water. At the far end of the pond stood a buck. i fired and the buck went down, flopped about one minute and expired.

The ball took out three ribs and left an entry hole over 1 1/2 inches in diameter: It may have hit a branch before striking the buck. The ball did not exit. My camera went dead, i'll post a photo of the hole tomorrow.

Distance: About 45 yards
Gun: .54 TC New Englander
Powder: 120 grains of Black MZ
Ball: .530
Primer: Winchester #11 magnum
Patch lube: Leath R Seal

No exit needed:

congrats on the deer, does a round ball usually break that many ribs on entry?

Patched round balls over black powder have been putting meat on the ground for a long long time. Deer are the same now that they were back then, People have changed but the deer have not.
