Power belt copper vs platinum

Can you visually tell the difference between the two bullets after penetration? Reason being is that 2 shots were fired at an elk but only one put it down which was found under the hide on the opposite side. I'd like to know so we can stop wondering. By the way, it was a heavy 6x6 which green scored 320 1/4.

Congrats on your elk harvest. Perhaps the two pics below can remedy your questions on which bullet penetrated.

Comparing a 45cal 300gr to a 50cal 252gr is a poor comparison at best. Of course a heavier bullet with a higher sectional density will penetrate better. ;)

320, wow. Congrats! Got any pics? :D

Can't help you on the bullets, but curious as to why there were two different bullets used?

My guess would be that 2 different people shot at the Elk and only one shot is being considered the "kill" shot but since they can't tell the difference between the bullets they are having a hard time.

As to the OP, good luck. Telling those 2 apart after being fired can be a bit rough. Did you not recover the other bullet? Did it pass through? Were the weights and caliber of both bullets identical?

Are you by-chance color-blind? There's a nice chance the thread-starter can tell the difference. My two links present two different color bullet-remains.

So please compare / check your two eyes, before suggesting my comparison is poor.

I would imagine a hunter would know what color his bullet was before he shot it but if not he could ask a medium.,,,i guess :happy0157:

obviously only half baked :D

Semisane 10-01-2015 11:26 AM

Guys, your "medium", "well done" and "half baked" comments might cause the OP to simmer.

flounder33 10-01-2015 11:35 AM

I'm afried you might be right.

MountainDevil54 10-01-2015 08:49 PM

ive seen guys shooting the big 300 mags needing 2 shots on bulls, especially big ones.

RCIII 10-02-2015 12:58 PM

I was using the 338gr. platinum and my brother from PA was using the 295 gr. copper plated. No real reason - it just turned out that way.

RCIII 10-02-2015 01:01 PM

I really want to post a pic but it seems to be to large. Any hints on how to do it.

RCIII 10-02-2015 01:06 PM

I was shooting the 338 gr. platinum and my brother was shooting the 195 gr. copper plated. The bullet we recovered appears to be the copper plated which means I whiffed. Anyway, it's all good since Ive taken my share of bulls and this is his first. I really want to post a pic but it appears to big. Am i doing something wrong?

RCIII 10-02-2015 01:08 PM

By the way, this bull only went about 30 yards (double lunged) with hardly a trace of blood.

RCIII 10-02-2015 01:10 PM

Took us 3 trips and about 9 miles to get him out. Not bad for a 58 & 61 year ol.

super_hunt54 10-02-2015 01:48 PM

RCIII I'll send you a PM with my EMAIL and you can send me the pic. I'll convert it for you (size it appropriately) and send it back to you or post it up for you here. Either one you prefer.

RCIII 10-02-2015 03:28 PM

Awesome. Thanks

super_hunt54 10-02-2015 05:08 PM

Let's see if this worked. " />

DANNNNGGGGGG Nice bull RCIII Congrats. I can see why ya'll might get into a little tiff about who's it was!

RCIII 10-02-2015 05:16 PM

LOL. I'm pretty confident it was the copper plated bullet we found. Happy to be the "elk bugler" that brought him in though. Nothing like a DIY hunt and being successful.

super_hunt54 10-02-2015 05:38 PM

Yep they are good eatin! And you got a nice "hat rack" (or rather your brother does) for 12 hats! :D

RCIII 10-02-2015 05:46 PM

Well I got 6 hat racks already but none that big. But damn, I just don't usually miss when I put down the hammer.

super_hunt54 10-02-2015 06:35 PM

Ehh, we ALL miss at one time or another. Don't feel bad, at least your brother didn't choke :D (runs off giggling like a mad man)

RCIII 10-02-2015 06:39 PM

Ouch, you really know how to kick a man when he's down. LOL

And you know what? Rack is still here in Colorado so you know what they say about possession.

if using facebook, copy and paste the link that starts with [IMG]

Great bull! I took my NM deer to the meat locker to hang for a few days. Awesome bulls hanging. I took some pics to show how huge these suckers are.

I shot my buck with the 338gr platinum and it dropped. All I heard after the shot was screaming from a friend and my bro in law lol. They saw him drop at the sound of the shot.

Slowburn 10-02-2015 07:53 PM

RCIII congrats to both y'all on a successful hunt. Purdy nice bull there...

flounder33 10-03-2015 03:41 AM

That is a real beauty. Congrats
