A Traditional day

The wife was gone and so there wasn't anybody around to tell me what all I needed to do , so I figured I might as well go shoot. I went the traditional route

A Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken in 54 cal. 1:65 twist . I figured I would try 90 gr 3 f triple 7 , Remington caps, and 530 round ball with .018 patch.

First couple of shots were high and barely nicked the top of the target. I lowered the sight. that is not an easy task. I hate the sights on it. then it was better but a little to far to the right.

Luckily the rear sight has a screw and you can loosen that and drift the rear sight a little. So I did that which gave me the hole you see on the left. The sights were very blurry.

Last time I shot this ,it was dead accurate so rather than continue to mess around , since the sights were so blurry with my bad vision I decided to wait til I put a peep on the rear and a globe sight on the front. I have them but never got around to getting them on. Now my vision is such that it is a definite need if I want to shoot this gun anymore.

The best I managed to do was a 2 inch group at 50 yards, whereas in the past it would shoot cloverleafs at 100. actually it probably still will but I can't. so on the next big adventure

practicing shooting with the sling using the no pulse hold.

Question is , what should I try it with . Hmmm.

That's a really nice lookin ML

It really is a good looking sidehammer ML... Awesome!

Semisane 06-01-2015 12:33 PM

Careful there Sharpshooter, "no pulse" is not anything to look forward to. :s10:

Just for grins, try using something like Elmer's glue to attach a 3/8" washer to the rear sight to make temporary forward peep, and see how that works for you. Use a large target and don't worry about placement on the target. Just see what kind of groups you get. If that works it wouldn't be difficult to permanently modify the rear sight to a big hole peep.

I've always found it difficult to get good groups with hefty charges of T7, and usually default to RS or GOEX. Is T7 what you were using in prior shots with the gun?

TNHagies 06-01-2015 01:10 PM

That's a gorgeous stock! My Pedersoli doesn't like 777 at all, Goex has always been the most accurate out of it. I will certainly shoot better than I can, that's for certain.

1874sharpsshooter 06-01-2015 01:24 PM

Triple 7 is what i used before in it and got cloverleaf groups . I think the blurry sights were the real problem. I have a creedmore rear and tunnel front sight but never got them installed . If i want to ever shoot this gun again i am going to have to go that route it looks like .

super_hunt54 06-01-2015 02:23 PM

You aint alone Sharpshooter. I haven't been able to shoot open site at any real distance for 15 or so years. Hated it but I had to put that infernal devils glass on all my hunting rigs. Or limit myself to 50 yards or closer. I even have a magnifier on my Bow sites!

Trade you for an ultra lite :)
You would look good traipsing through the woods with it slung over your shoulder

Lol, I'm sure you would!!

Muley Hunter 06-01-2015 06:37 PM

Never say "no pulse" to an old guy.

cayugad 06-02-2015 04:41 AM

very nice looking rifle. I bet it was a lot of fun.

Are you always so serious in real life, or is this a forum character you've developed?

I've never seen you fool around even once, or respond to someone else doing it.

Always the politically right answer. ZZZZZZZZzzzzz

You should read your sig again.

Did someone poop in your Alpo Flakes this morning? Cayugad is in multiple ML Messageboards Hall Of Fame. You need permission from the BPHOF Executive Board Committee to mess with Cayugad. :poke:

The last 1,342 people that tried were denied. :throw:

Muley Hunter 06-02-2015 05:46 AM

I'm on multiple forums too, and i've been reading his posts for years.

I'd just like to see him lighten up a little, and have fun. If that's the way he is in real life, then there's not much to be done.

I mess with everybody. In real life, and forums. It keeps me smiling.

I'm also the master of going off topic. Just because I can. :p (Hi Cal)

I personally LOVE his approach on this and other forums. I work hard and my free time is limited so the last thing I want to do is wade through drama on these boards.

Dave is a clone of some of the best people I do business with on a daily basis. It's people with his character and professionalism that motivates others to do the same. It's a contagious personality and I wish more people followed suit.

That being said, I do recall a time he was pushed to a point and fired back. You could have heard a virtual pin drop... it was awesome!

Muley Hunter 06-02-2015 07:03 AM

Answers to questions can be given while still having some fun. We're not talking about medical problems here. It's shooting and hunting. Should be fun.

Just like being in hunting camp with buddies.

Hey Muley...

I'll extend it a bit beyond what Cayugad said and say it's a BEAUTIFUL rifle for one that's manufactured. I wish I had one and it was nice to see someone like 1874ss share his day shooting it with us especially seeing as how I'm a lover of traditional style ML's.

AND... (this goes out to 1874ss) if you think shooting gets tougher as you get older and your vision gets worse... TRY FLY TYING!!.. I'm with you brother, it's tough having the things you love get harder to do and enjoy each year.

TRY FLY TYING!!
I know what you mean BPS. I give up on tied flies quite a while back. Went to buttons first. Now I have to use zippers. I couldn't tie my fly these days if I had to.

I had to invest in some magnification glasses and keep them in the boat. I was having such a terrible time just tying on a silly hook, after they put those long distance lenses in my eyes. Now I have them glasses in the kitchen, bathroom, computer room, living room, work shop, even a pair in my truck... good thing there is a dollar store.

Hehehe Talk about a joke "flying" over someones head! Lawdy have mercy I almost tipped me wheelie chair over laughing. Someone splain it to the fella! I'm laughin to dang hard :barmy:.

Oops, Edit to add...Thats a purdy rifle there buddy!

Muley Hunter 06-03-2015 04:52 AM

Of course it's a good looking gun. I don't think Chet needs to told that. What traditional shooter hasn't wanted a Pedersoli Hawken in maple? I can't afford a $1200 gun, and they don't come in a LH version anyway.

So there! Sour grapes and all.

What's the matter Muley? Forget where you put your Geritol? ;)

Muley Hunter 06-03-2015 07:21 AM

Never took that. What's it good for?

Will it give me wings?

super_hunt54 06-03-2015 07:46 AM

Pete was one of the Stars on "Grump Old Men" :p

Muley Hunter 06-03-2015 07:53 AM

I wish. Then I could buy a Pedersoli Hawken.

super_hunt54 06-03-2015 07:58 AM

So stop blowing all yer money on Bear Grease and save up ;)

Muley Hunter 06-03-2015 08:30 AM

Bear grease is kind of pricey. Then again the bears don't think so.

Ok, i'm done. I raped this thread enough.

Semisane 06-03-2015 09:25 AM

Regarding Pedersoli Hawken rifles. I just got an email from Pedersoli with a video announcing a Hawken Hunter with a .50 caliber 1:24" twist and tang mounted ghost ring aperture sight.

Here's a link to the video in the email.

Gm54-120 06-03-2015 10:38 AM

This one?
http://www.davide-pedersoli.com/sche...ercussion.html

TB had a 50 1-24 since Oct. of last year but it does not appear to be the same model.

Semisane 06-03-2015 10:47 AM

Yeah, that's it. I forgot to paste in the video link. Here it is.

The email said it was a new product, and the video was published May 29th.

Muley Hunter 06-03-2015 11:35 AM

Better than using an inline, but they should really call it something besides a Hawken.

Anybody see a price yet?

Gm54-120 06-03-2015 11:43 AM

Did you notice Pedersoli's website lists the 54cal Hunter as a 1-24 also. The video lists 54 as a 1-48 twist.

Its too bad that dont offer it in a fast twist 45 too.

Just responding to the latest topic.

Why, do my posts bother you? I hope so. :p

Blackpowdersmoke 06-04-2015 11:06 AM

They don't bother me Muley... I get a chuckle out of most of em'. I get a mental picture of you (the picture in your avatar) sitting at a computer and it always makes me smile!

Now Semisane on the other hand, well... he just knows how to make ya laugh whether you wanna or not!

I'm not trying to make you laugh when I post.

I'm trying to make me laugh.
