In my recent post titled "Heavy Lead in the .45 GM/TC Renegade" I mentioned using some commercial .50 caliber felt wads under the bullets, and that the wads were difficult to get into the bore.
Not only was it a tedious process, it was hard to get them in flat without cocking. The wads were Bridgers Best (which I think is the same as Ox-Yoke) and have a measured diameter of .508/.509.
I won't have that problem in the next range session.
The home-cut wads in the picture below have a diameter of .458/.459. compressing easily into the muzzle and filling the grooves perfectly. I figure I'll be getting 1,728 wads from that piece of felt.

I spent $18 for the felt and $10.70 for the hollow punch, for a total of $28.70. I can get anywhere from 1,500 to 1,700 wads from that piece of felt, depending on caliber (having the option of punching wads for my .32, .50, and .54 caliber guns).
For about the same amount, $30.71, I could have gotten 400 Ox-Yoke 44/45 caliber dry felt wads from Track of the Wolf ($6.19 per hundred plus $5.95 shipping). http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Catego.../1/OX-WAD-44-D
Certainly, four hundred would last me a long time.
So I might be saving a few bucks, but it won't make me rich. It took me fifteen minutes to punch out 200 wads today.
