Default Bore it out question?

Howdy folks, I have a Austin Halleck Mountain Rifle I got when they were going out of business a few years back. I got the fast twist option (1/28) cause I thought I would want to shoot conicals out of it. Now I wish I had got the round ball barrel. Question I have is: Can I have the barrel reamed out and re-rifled in .54 as a slow twist? A friend of mine at work says he has heard of a smith back east (anywhere is east of me) who does this. Any of you ever done such a thing and or have a reference for me?

Thanks in advance.

Send a PM to bronko22000. He's been a member of this site since Moses wore little pants. He knows a smith near where he lives (central PA) that does that type of work on black powder rifles and I believe he has had the man do that for him a time or two so he will vouch for his work. It may take a little time for him to respond as he's in Fla. visiting family right at the moment, but he'll be back soon, our rifle season is coming up shortly.

Ed Rayle in West Virginia can do it or make you a new barrel...

What is the width across the flats??? You need enough metal left
to handle the pressure...

Contact one of these guys. The cost will be around $100.

How far can you take out a barrel? Is two sizes too much? As an example. Can a Renegade that has a thick barrel be taken from .50 to .58?

They will go up to .58 rifled or 62 smoothbore in a 1" barrel, or .54 in a 15/16" barrel.

Kind of a short barrel on the Renegade though. Not sure a slow twist would work that well?

Semi,

It's a small world indeed. I've had relatives in Gassaway WV for years and never knew that's where Ed Rayl was located.
