Still looking for load for the Wolf
#11
If you're looking for a light-recoiling load for the Wolf, I have used the .40 cal 200 grain XTP with the MMP blue sabot on top of 70 grains of T7. My dad doesn't like recoil, and I set up this load with his Wolf a few years ago. I only shot it for accuracy at 50 yards, since this is as far as my dad would shoot, but it shot well at that range.
The 200 XTP also expands and performs well at this velocity range - we've taken several deer with it.
The even easier solution is to just drop your powder charge with your 240 XTP to 60 - 70 grains. This will still get the job done at ranges under 100 yards....

I'd keep playing with the loads and the 240 xtp's. Like was mentioned...start at 80, and work up by 5gr until you get to 100, see what groups best. If you are at 1.5" now (which certainly isn't bad) , you may find a load that tightens that up a smidge.

I think I'll try adjusting the powder charge with the 240gr XTPs and see what happens. I was using 90gr ffg Goex, so next trip to the range I'll try 80 & 100gr and see if there's any improvement in going up or down with the charge. If it does show improvement in one direction I can move up/down from that charge in 5gr increments.
I like the way those 240gr XTPs expanded.

If cost is not an issue, you really should try either the 44-225gr XPB or the .451-225gr XPB for low recoil and even for regular loads. They are very effective and you can switch out to the 225gr FTX or any 230gr ACP bullet for practice loads.
At close ranges the point of impact only needs minor adjustment. They are also about the best value offered by Barnes. I see them on sale more often than other weights.

Ive tried all sorts of loads in my Wolf.
It seems to like everything pretty much well.
Two loads stand out above the rest.
The .452 XTP 250 Grain Sabot with MMP Short Black Sabot
Any .458 Bullet with the Harvester Black Crush Ribbed works great. The Hornady 4500 300 Grain Interbond is the load I settled in on. with 100 Gr BH209. A bit of a kicker on the bench with the Wolf but its what the wolf liked the best.
