Longest muzzleloader shot
I was arguin with a friend of mine bout max range with a muzzleloader. He told me he could not see shootin a deer past 100 150 yards i was wonderin just how far everyones hit em. I hit my first buck and doe right at 250 yards my third doe 125 and my fourth doe at 80. Three were heart lung hits and my third doe was a spine hit. So how far have u dropped one and what with all mine was with a tc triumph with a omega bdc scope 150 grains 777 and 250 grain shockwave

My longest have been 223,234,305 and 317.
|
You guys are shooting w-a-a-a-y out there. The longest possible shot on my hunting lease is 175 yards. I think my longest shot was a doe at 125 yards with the Omega X7 and 250 grain Deep Curls over 85 grains GOEX. Good middle chest hit. She went about thirty yards before dropping.

Being that most of the places I hunt you can't see more than 100 yds (and that is only in certain areas) the farthest I've ever killed a deer with my ML was about 60 yds. The closest was about 10 feet!
|
The longest shot I ever made was with a T/C Renegade, .54 caliber, open peep sight, 90 grains of Pyrodex RS, CCI #11 cap, at somewhere between 80-90 yards. The trick was, the first deer was about 80 yards, the ball went through that deer and fifteen feet behind it, was a second deer... that the ball hit and broke the spine of. So both deer.. maybe 85 to 90 yard at best. I am not sure because I found out how poor of a pacer I am.
I am not a good long distance shooter. And that is easy for me to admit. Truth is easy to tell. I do not have the skills anymore to do it with open sights, and with optics, I never practice them enough to feel comfortable with. |
Longest I've killed a deer is 60 yards, but I can bust milk jugs all day long out to 300 yards.
|
My longest shots were a big doe at 177 yards and a black bear at 187 yards both with a 54 Hawkens I built from scratch except the barrel, I was shooting a 535 PRB with a ticking patch and 120 grains of Blackpowder. The deer was in the corn fields of Il and the bear was in northern Canada. The deer was shot on the last afternoon of the 3 day gun season and the bear was shot while I was building my blind never did finish it.
|
I can only guesstimate that my longest shot with a muzzleloading rifle that took a deer was maybe 60 yds. Like Bronko and Cayugad I prefer to hunt in the woods or thickets where a long shot may be 70+ yds. at best. But then, I prefer to hunt with sidelocks and open sights, never got much enjoyment from a scoped in-line.

The longest kill i thought was 314 yard antelope. However, now that i think on it more, i realize it was more closer to 317.1 yard.
The longest shot was 452 yard. |
My longest was 115 paces, so somewhere around that for yards? It was with open sights and I don't know that I would shoot much farther than that with open sights.
|
With a flintlock, 125 yards with 80grs FFF Goex and a home cast .530 ball...
With an inline, 147 yards...With 80grs FFF Goex and a 250 Shockwave... |
When I was young and dumb I had just missed a decent buck at about ten yards, shot right over its back! I was walking out of the cutovers and three doe come running by at about 120 yards and I nailed the biggest one on a dead run. I would never do that now and do not promote shooting that way, but like I said, I was young and dumb.

My average muzzleloader shot is <75 yards. My longest shot on deer was 172 yards. My two longest shots on hogs were 192 and 226 yards. i did kill a huge coyote at over 300 yards with a Hail Mary shot. Meant to scare him off and was surprised when he bang flopped.
Will not take a long shot on deer or hogs unless conditions are perfect for the shot: Good rest, no wind, animal standing still and broadside, etc. |
Way back in the bad ole days of prb and "traditional" ml only, I made a 127 yard shot on a piebald 7 pt er. Hangfire too, only hangfire I've ever had while hunting, was creepin/sneaking up a 4' deep ditch then shooting off a 10" log for a solid rest, 50 cal., prb., 1/60 twist shooting 180 gr in ticking patch with bees wax n deer tallow lube over 110 gr of FFF Swiss with RWS #11 cap, never a hangfire before or since with that rifle.
Longest shot was in 09. Yardage 287 ranged after the shot. Up a beaver swamp/drainage. From a treestand bout 25' up. Big doe crossing swamp 2 beaver ponds up drainage. Rifle is 50 cal. Savage MLII, 300 gr. Speer .458 bullet in a black crush rib sabot, 44 gr. of 4759, CCI 209M primer, Bushnell 3-9X40 scope, at shot deer DRT on high shoulder shot. I love my SML rifles, 3 Savage MLIIs 50 cal., 2 re-upbuilt Remmy 700 MLs 45 cal. and a 45 "Slewfoot" Encore. 10 |
For me 151 yards (lazer verified), shooting offhand. 80 grains T7 fffg with a 185 Lehigh out of my .45. I don't think I would try shooting any farther than that...
|
mine was a nice 10 pt buck @264 yrds using a tc impact & a leupold 3x9 ultraslam & 110 grains of bh209 & a barnes 300tez bullet it came out of a protected state park & was turning around to go back in to the park only chance was to shoot it then & dropped drt tried to get up but never did but most of my shots i like to pet them first usually meaning within 17 yrds

167 yards for me. I was shooting my white rifle with 100grs of p and a 460gr super slug.

128 yards for me. However, we shoot 3-4" groups at the 200 yard range. I would have no problem going out farther but I always set up my position to offer a shot 125 and in.
I hunt with CF guys and let them have the prairie and I hunt the creek bottoms. Both spots have about an equal chance to score a nice buck. Wont be long and the season is here!!! |

Omega z5 50 cal.
My longest shots were 250 yards out to 300 from my shooting house from a bench with my rifle in a gun vise. The rifle is a T/C Omega Z5 50 cal. loaded with a 45 cal. .451 240 gr. xtp hp and a mmp black sabot. I am using 150grs. of 777 and a cci 209 primer. Scope is a 10x50 tasco world class plus. Deer were bucks, does, hogs, coyotes, and a few other type critters. I spent long hours of shooting at targets in this foodplot at fixed ranges and have my scope set for 250 yards. After much practice I have got my shot pattern at 250 yards to about 2.5 or better inches with a 3 shot pattern swabbing between shots before the pattern opens up to around 5 to 6 inches. Only bad thing is i have to take two rifles the omega for the long shot and my knight mk 85 or one of my traditional side hammer guns for the close shots. I use the same bullet and black sabot in the mk 85 as the omega but only 100grs of powder. I use the mk 85 out to 100 yards. My go to side hammer is a T/C Hawken 50 cal. with prb and 80grs FFG goex black powder, i use mink oil as lube its the best stuff i have ever used as patch grease. I just got a new in box old stock T/C Hawken 54 CAL. a few weeks back and if it groups well i will be using it as a close range rifle along with the others.

Not more than 100 yards here. Most shots are less than 50 yrds. There are not many open spaces where I hunt. I usually hunt in fairly thick woods so when I see a deer it is usually pretty close.
|
Farthest I've ever killed one was about 125yds. Most shots are under 50 where I hunt. I have a couple guns that I know I could easily kill one at 200yds, if I did my job.
|
Elk, 120 yards. Have never had a muzzy with a scope on it.
|
I have taken 3 shots in the 200 range on game. Killed a coyote at 190, and two good bucks right around 200 each. A lot of my shots are in the 150 yard range for deer, the nature of late season hunting. Out at 200+ yards a ballistic reticle is just about mandatory.
Having practiced some out to 300 yards....thats quite the poke. Most people don't realize how much their bullet will drift in the wind at that range, let alone how much it drops. PS Haven't missed a single animal yet at that 200 yard range either. Have to be really choosy with your shots at that range. |
I have a friend that says he shot a deer so far away that the meat had spoiled before he got to it. He does say that it was a warm day, tho.
