Made another shooting trip today. It rained pretty decently last night, so I figured the farm would be muddy, so I headed to the Rock Pit.

This time of the year I really do not like going to the Rock Pit, one because of the nice day somebody might already be there and two- the trash in the pit. It just bugs me that we shooters can get so messy. I really wonder why the people do not realize they are shooting themselves in the foot. The mess which will need to be cleaned up by US Forest Service people is gong to cost and cause a lot of hard feelings. It is only a matter of time and the FS is going to close the pit or the road to the pit. It you take it in - take it out.

Anyway back to the point of the trip. I wanted to complete sighting the rifle in at 100 yards. I did set up a paper target and took two shots on the target. From my 50 yard target yesterday I ended up moving 2 clicks left and 6 clicks up. Took the 3rd shot at the paper and I was at noon and right at 2.75" inches high.

I had moved back to do-it-all load for the rifle .458-275 gr. Bloodline in a red Knight sabot. T7-2f powder - 110 grains by volume - thrown on site.

The last two shots of the afternoon were the fun ones. I picked out a Clay Pigeon Chip on the wall of the rock pit. It seemed like a chip that probably was about a 1/3rd to 1/2 of the original bird. Ranged it @ 109 yards, it was laying in loose soil so I was going to have to hit it to get rid of it. I did get it but it took two shots.

Next trip - the plan is to get some velocities shooting through the chrono...

That's a deadly load Sabotloader. It will be intersting to see the chrono results.

It is a shorter barrel but I think I will look at some 120 grain loads also...

What would happen if you put a sign up there that said something about taking your trash out of there so the forest service doesn't close it? I can't imagine everyone that goes there would pay attention, but even if one or two did it would help.

They would shoot the sign Kirby. The shooters who left that trash will do just that.

Am curious though as I see several take a camera shot through your scope. How do you do that and what camera are you using? I need to try that!

The last year that I was working for the FS in recreation, I did exactly that. The sign only lasted a couple of weeks before it was used as the target. The worst part.... 50 people could shoot there and it only takes 3 or 4 of them to make a mess and ruin it for all.

I am just using a small Cannon digital camera. I do not have the best luck doing it but I have seen others that get really nice pictures through their scopes.

But any way, I just aim the camera through the scope and adjust the magnification of the camera to try to get a clear picture.

I am sure that others could tell us both a better method.

Well, you made me try to take a picture through the scope, even though i can't say i 'know' how. For me it was a matter of trial and error with camera location, and zoom setting, just like sabotloader described. Another thing i always seem to do is to take a whole pile of pictures, and hope one turns out. My camera is a pocket camera that has quite a long zoom, and i try to put it in a pocket whenever i leave the house, headed for the hills. The camera has given me a lot of problems with dust getting inside the lens, so i won't mention the brand. Nowaday, i put the camera in a zip-lock bag before i put it into a pocket.

hey Thanks Ron! I also carry a camera in the pocket. I have used the Nikon Cool Pic brand and have two - one for the truck and one for my hunting vest.

And I am going to try that on my own........even when I get that turkey in as I have a scope on that BP White Shotty I purchased from 1874SS.

sabotloader---Nice that you harp on everyone cleaning up after themselves at the range, but to be a good steward on a rifle range you don't put out clay targets to make a big mess all over the landscape instead of just staying on paper! At least paper someone might leave can be picked up by the next person so it won't be there too long or it will disintegrate after a while with some rain and snow. Oh, but I'll bet you went out and picked up every speck of those nasty orange clay birds though!!!
