Pick up some Evapo-Rust at the auto parts store to remove the rust, soaking overnight will take all the rust off.
I have had good results with Ballistol and Sheath and Barricade but like Birchwood Casey synthetic oil best, it lasts longest and if you want to remove it before you shoot a couple of alcohol patches will take it out.
