Getting in shape

Upcoming hunting season is fast approaching. And I've put on few pounds over the off seaon. And old age ain't helping any. I started walking about a month ago. Started out easy 15 mins a day. I'm up to covering 2 miles now in just over 32 mins. That's moving along at a pretty good clip - something like 3.5 mph. Not too shabby for a 59 yo, overweight fart like me. I will be happy when I can cover 1/2 of that 2 miles at a jog to get he heart rate up.
I can already see the difference. I only lost 4 lbs but have tons more energy. And I feel and sleep better too.
Bring on those north central PA mtns this year!

MountainDevil54 08-02-2012 04:15 PM

good for you! Now you will be in shape to drag out the elk muley and I shoot!

HuntAway 08-02-2012 04:26 PM

Being on the wrong side of 50 myself....albeit a tad younger.:poke: I was thinking the same thing. So I broke out the bicycle and started biking 3 miles to work then back. Now that don't seem like much until you see the friggen hills I've got to climb to get to work!:nonono2: Coming home is much much easier so I take a longer route coming home.

My boy and I were out setting up the bear bait and he was shocked at how well I carried in my bag of feed. Climbed the ridge like it was nothing.

HA

I started this spring working on the wood piles and never let off. I've put myself on a diet and try to get exercise. And it has been working. I've dropped off a lot of the winter weight, and have made a promise to myself that this winter I will stick with the plan. So maybe the hunting season will go well. As long as the knees hold out that is.

Dont tempt me. If you can guarantee me a tag I'll be there!

huntingkidPA 08-02-2012 05:02 PM

bronko those mountains are tough up there, you ever tried or got lucky enough to draw an elk tag up around benezette?

bronko22000 08-02-2012 05:11 PM

I apply every year since it started. no luck yet. And as for the mtns in NCPA. I have a camp in Clinton Co. so I know all about them. Everywhere from the camp is up hill. Some places you almost scrape your nose going up.

I could have for the draw. Too late now.

I was scouting this morning and saw a nice buck. Not the best picture. Lots of elk bugling. This is just 10-15 min from where I live. 8500ft. We'll also be going to 11,000ft.

Buck center of picture. It was only 40yds. It looks longer in picture. Not sure why.

MountainDevil54 08-02-2012 06:03 PM

they always do that muley. Got to have big time zoom for the picture to come out nicely.

No tags left for this unit bronko. You could come along though to help me carry muley :D

Muley Hunter 08-02-2012 06:08 PM

If I go down. Just dig a hole and roll me in.

I don't like to be dragged.

MountainDevil54 08-02-2012 07:19 PM

dig a hole in that country?? HA! You'll be lucky if i pile some rocks on ya! :D

Semisane 08-02-2012 07:57 PM

We could get him down here for a swamp hunt. If he keels over you could either feed him to the gators or just stomp him down into the mud.

MountainDevil54 08-02-2012 09:30 PM

dang it! I should have done the Outlaw josey wales and said.... Buzzards gotta eat, same as the worms... :D

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 01:44 AM

Off to the 11,000ft area.

I'm sleepy.

pluckit 08-03-2012 03:09 AM

Dang guy's. You're talking about losing weight and I can never seem to gain it. Poor me. And no mountains where I hunt. Shoot, I got it bad!:s14:

yea they are straight up and straight down. I go and see the elk every year up there. Its very cool seeing those big bulls roam through the town. hopefully you'll have good luck with drawing a tag in the years to come. Is it your choice of weapon (bow, centerfire, ML) if you draw a tag?

bronko22000 08-03-2012 05:41 AM

Weapon choice is going to be a struggle. Depends on where I guess. Archery is my passion followed by MLing. Its been years since I carried a CF rifle in the woods. And then its usually something old like a .45-70 or 405 win. But sometimes I like to carry a 'newer' cartridge like the 30-06!!!

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 09:10 AM

I'm back and wiped out. I saw a dozen does, 1 buck, and a small herd or cow elk. Plus, I heard some bulls bugling, but couldn't get close enough to them for a picture.

I'm going back to bed.

bronko22000 08-03-2012 09:37 AM

Nappy time for the old man!

MountainDevil54 08-03-2012 09:47 AM

lil guy is just like a baby. Sure hope i dont have to change diapers this hunting season and make him warm bottles of milk for him to sucky on

bronko22000 08-03-2012 10:08 AM

hmmm... boxers? briefs? Depends?................

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 10:46 AM

I went out to lunch instead. Then took the pooch for a hike.

Wiseguys.

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 10:49 AM

Took this when I got up there this morning.Thought i'd share it.

One of the does.

MountainDevil54 08-03-2012 10:50 AM

pretty! I bet the air was invigorating that early in the morning!

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 10:53 AM

It was perfect. About 40 degrees.

MountainDevil54 08-03-2012 10:57 AM

oh dang thats to cold for me. Im sure it will be warmer around noon when i wake up

bronko22000 08-03-2012 11:28 AM

I like hunting/walking right around 50*. That sure is some pretty country Muley. Reminds me more of Idaho than Colorado though. Just the landscape and foliage (that'd be trees and bushes). :)

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 11:34 AM

I love that kind of timber. Very easy to still hunt in. Especially now when it's always wet from daily rain.

My camera makes everything look far away. That was about 25 yds to the doe.

MountainDevil54 08-03-2012 11:40 AM

gotta get you a camera with a bigger zoom in lens.

This buck was Aprox 150 yards away

225-250 yards.

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 11:40 AM

I have to chuckle a bit when I hear out of state hunters say the west is all open country hunting.

MountainDevil54 08-03-2012 11:42 AM

that forest is a breeze to walk through compared to the crap we have down here.

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 11:44 AM

Bigger zoom Jon? I have a reverse zoom. It looks farther away than what I see with my eyes. Lousy for taking pictures of game. Plus, when I turn the camera on it makes a whirring noise that scares away the animals.

MountainDevil54 08-03-2012 11:48 AM

yeah mine does that too, i have the nikon coolpix118 and makes that noise when turned on. I normally borrow my dads Kodak camera with has i think a 16 or 18x zoom lens. That one is nice but scary if i bust it lol. The video camera though is the best to use IMO.

Muley, that's cause you have to actually get OUT OF THE TRUCK!:hit: :p

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 01:22 PM

Why would I do that? It's cold out there. :p

bronko22000 08-03-2012 03:06 PM

You just know I can't miss a good opportunity to give a poke to you guys when I get the chance.

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 05:02 PM

Not a problem bud. I can take a lot of poking if it's in fun.

Not very much when it isn't.

Breechplug 08-03-2012 06:40 PM

Turned 50 myself on Dec 31st....over the winter I gained 30lbs! went from 220 to 250. But with the Grapes Froze and not much work to do I decided I better lose some weight because my pants dont fit anymore. And if my regular pants dont fit then my Groetex Mossy Oak Hunting clothes wont fit either.
So for the last 5 weeks I've been cutting firewood, and carrying the logs through the woods on my shoulders to my truck, then splitting them by hand, dropped 25lbs and feel as good as I did when I was 25.
Im sure I'll still be able to pass on the 4-wheeler when it comes time to drag out my deer this fall, I like the 2 mile drag, No Pain No Venison!

Muley Hunter 08-03-2012 06:45 PM

Never say drag 2 miles to an old guy.

Skin, quarter, and haul out the pieces sounds better. (sort of)

Remember, you hunt Mulies and I Whitetails, but I refuse to think Im Older. There was a bunch of my daughters friends at the house a few weeks ago and there all big boys, one looked like the Hulk.
Well the pride set in and I told him "lets arm wrestle" ok the drinks helped. I thought I was in for a fight but won no problem. Then the rest of the 20-25 year old guys wanted in, I beat everyone of them, there girlfiends were'nt happy but I was. My Daughter even videoed it and put it on Facebook.
I refuse to let age get to me, mabey someday and Im sure it will, but a season or so ago I shot 2 big does, 121 and 126lbs and I dragged both out on the snow with my MLer 2 miles to my truck.
The best part was when I got to my truck my buddy called me on my cell and said you want us to come help drag them out??? I told him I was already at my truck with both of them in the bed.
