I really like the Pedersoli Country Hunter in that it has a twist rated for sabots (1:34").
I emailed Dixie Gun Works, who carries it, and was told that it's max load is a mere 50 grns. What?!?! Seriously? Anyone know if that's just a gross safety statement or is this true? It certainly doesn't seem right. I was really liking that rifle too. I emailed them to see if I get a different response. If that is the case I suppose the Lyman's Deerstalker is my rifle... |
A member of another forum found this for me:
Country Hunter .50 Flintlock Powder Charge - 50 grains Maximum Powder Charge - 100 grains .490 Ball & .010 patch I find it odd that Pedersoli gave the barrel a 1:34" twist and show the use of a RB. Will that work well? |

"Opinions will vary but my opinion is that your most reliable ignition in a sidelock will be with black powder. I am not saying the subs won't work cuz they will."
Are musket caps the same size as #11 caps? sabot: "I believe it would with a reduced powder charge like 50 grains - that really is not much of a powder charge." I asked Dixie Gun Works what the max was and the reply was 50 grns, which certainly didn't sound right at all. My ROA can come close to that w/o a wad using a RB I'd guess. 40 grns fits w a wad and leaving a slight amount of space between the ball and mouth. |

Rifle. I'm not concerned with reducing loads with a ROA and 777.
