Default White Lightning

Well I got the rifle from Nimrodder yesterday and had some time to work with it today.

I wanted this rifle as it is a White! and how do you go wrong with a White. Also it is a perfect rifle for Idaho's ML's rules - we are still behind times here... But the most important reason I wanted the rifle was for the barrel. It is a Wilson .504 and the Lehigh sabotless bullet fit it perfectly. It is a little loose in my White 504 U Mag, which has a Clerke barrel.

The White Lightening is a 6# riifle, with a 22" barrel, I wish it were a 24" but I can make this one work. Since it is a Idaho rifle, no scope, but Nim did send along the Williams WGRS sight that I installed on the receiver.

I have not got to shoot it yet and I am hoping for later in the week to get it sighted in and get some shooting done. But according to Doc's website I should not have any problem...

The rarest WHITE rifle, so rare I didn't have one in my collection for a while. Only 2000 were made in 1994 and all were sold by 1995. Wilson made the barreled actions and did such a great job that no Lightning rifle has ever been returned because of accuracy problems. I have never had one traded in, ever!
The barrel and action were one piece in one inch diameter, the only caliber was .504 with a slightly tapered 22 inch barrel , the lightweight SG-series action (SG means Small G) was a mirror image of the Whitetail and Bison actions only with the cocking handle on the right and the trigger safety on the left. Internal parts were otherwise the same as all other G-Series rifles except the hammer, which the idiot machinists made slightly larger. Stocks were lightweight Birch, painted black with a rubber recoil pad. Weight was right at 6 lbs. I never saw an inaccurate one.

Looking forward to the range report Sabotloader. Are you going to shoot just the Lehighs, or try some heavy lead also?

I will probably shoot some other bullets also, but this gun probably will not see any heavy lead. The Umag or the Renegade with the GM-LRH barrel usually handle the heavy stuff.

But you never know...

Sabotloader, any concern about barrel wear shooting the brass bullets?

How much loading pressure do you think is necessary when you have what you consider the right sized barrel for that brass bullet? Why do you want to shoot the lehighs without a sabot? Do you think you will have better accuracy shooting them sabotless? Will you be changing your nickname if you don't use sabots nomore?

Nope! brass is a self lubricating metal. Also Lehigh makes brass bullets for all kinds of centerfire rifles, hunters, target shooters, police, and the military...

Look at these match bullets

These are a high velocity hunting bullet

Much the same as loading a good fitting sabot... other than you need a short starter to move the barbs through the crown, after that just push them down.

Why do you want to shoot the lehighs without a sabot?
Basically because I have them and Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho require a full bore conical during ML season.

Do you think you will have better accuracy shooting them sabotless?
I am thinking the smokeless guys are thinking that as they convert over to 45 barrels and go sabotless.

Will you be changing your nickname if you don't use sabots nomore?
nope! I still prefer sabots... i think but I will no more after I shoot the Lightening..

But even with a very loose fit in the Ultra Mag they did not shot bad at all.

Didn't you also shoot them out of your mk 85 with excellent results? Anyway, back to the thread topic, Congrats on the White Lightning, it should be a great rifle.

I notice you highlighted the range in blue on that target to avoid the gris-gris. Wise move.

Yes, i did and you are correct - they shot great... but they are a bear to load. All the way down the tube. That is why I went after the 504 Wilson barrel hoping it would be just slightly larger, which it is and it loads sweet....
