Has anyone ever had a problem leading up the barrel when shooting conicals? So far I have not, but I clean with Hoppe's #9 after I clean with hot soap and water. Does the lube keep the leading down? Thanks

I would hate to guess how many conical bullets I have shot through my White rifles. And like you, from time to time I will brush them with some good solvent. And I have never had a problem with leading.

On occasion, use a good solvent and brush the bore. That should take care of the lead problem.. if any existed.

I don't think the leading gets too bad, because we use lube on the bullets for muzzleloaders.

Muley's right. I never noticed much of a problem with leading in the ML's I shoot conicals through. I use an overpowder wad and that may help. I don't skimp on the lube either. After a thourough soap and water cleaning and drying, I sometimes saturate a patch with a good quality solvent like Butch's or some Kroil and let it stand for a day or so then go back and swab again to remove any possible leading. If you're still seeing some leading then use a bronze brush and solvent like Cayugad suggests.

Thanks guys. I suspect that the lube does the trick as far as leading goes.

This is the third time that I have written a reply so you may see four of them, or maybe none.

trying to push them fast is what will build up leading in the bore.

What do you call fast?

Good question, Muley Hunter. I shoot a 240grain conical with 80 grains RS behind it. I would guess that it is going appx. 1400-1500fps. It does not lead the barrel. I used to shoot lead bullets in a .357 mag. They should be going appx. 1400 fps too, and they leaded the barrel something terrible after a few shots. I suspect that the problem here was no lube, not too much speed.

1800fps i believe. Thats of course with lighter weight lead bullets. May even be 1600, i forget the exact fps.

The book says 1400, with good lube and over the powder wads you can push that some. What causes a lot of the leading in cartridge guns is the heat smokeless burns at it melts lead off the back end of the bullet.
