Default Lyman Flinter : poor QC

I went to put the Flintlock together today, so I could sight it in tomorrow. It has a sticker on the box that says the stock and barrel have been inspected for defects. Whoever inspected it didnt do a very good job. The nose cap is very loose. The screws holding the escutcheon are long enough that the barrel cannot be put on the stock without filing them off first as they stick to far through into the stocks barrel channel. No big deal on those two things but what really bothers me is the stock has a crack that runs fronm the nose cap to the first escutcheon. . I imagine I could glue it and clamp it til it dries but not sure if I want to. I have other Lymans and they were all good. This is the first . Only the crack bothers me. I bought it through a distributor so I dont know if I should fix it and forget it, contact them or contact Lyman. Since it has the inspection sticker I have a feeling Lyman may claim it wasnt like that when it left the factory. Guess I wont be shooting it tomorrow after all

I would give Lyman a call first thing Monday or take it back where I got it. Maybe that's God's way of telling you to wait for the .54 that you really want anyway.

Same here.. I would call or send the rifle back and demand a new one. And then tell them that quality control was sleeping on the job.

It sounds like a blemished factory second. Like many companies, Lyman sells what they call factory "reconditioned muzzleloaders".
And if this isn't a factory reconditioned muzzle loader then maybe it will become one after you contact Lyman.

Reconditioned Muzzleloaders

These muzzleloaders have been factory reconditioned. The stocks and/or barrels have slight blemishes to the finish and we are unable to sell them as first quality merchandise. These are available only on an "as is" basis while supplies last. Limited quantities available. Should the model you requested not be available, we will contact you promptly.

I would have liked to see the price they get for a reconditioned one. I bet it was more than I paid for a new one.

That's why I didn't own the first (and only) Lyman GPR flinter I ever had for very long. The lock was not inletted deep enough to mate up close to the barrel and the priming powder would fall down between the lock and stock. I took it back to the dealer and swapped it towards another T/C and never looked back.

I may regret not listening to everyone and sending the Flinter back. I did call Lyman this morning and explained the situation. They said since it was a fit problem to send it back and they would either customize it or replace it. Well I can't do that now because yesterday I decided to back the screws out of the escutcheon just to see how the barrel fit with them out of the way. That was when I found out the nose cap was to narrow for the barrel. I effectively voided the warranty and any chance of returning it because I got my dremel out , removed the nose cap and proceeded to grind the inside down little by little til the barrel would slip inside it. I kept checking and grinding til it fit perfectly. I reinstalled the nose cap and the barrel fit fine. So with that little act I was committed to fixing everything myself. This morning I bought epoxy and a clamp. The stock is clamped and by tomorrow it will be ready to shoot. I cold blued the inside of the nosecap since it was bare metal from grinding it down. I will post some pics later and a range report is forth coming. The epoxy and clamp were cheaper than shipping to send it back.

Not so sure you voided the warranty. On my last GPR I was having a problem with the lock. I had taken it apart and modified it to try and get it to work. It still wasn't right, so I called Lyman to explain it all. I had to get to the gunsmith to get satisfaction, but when I did he was a nice guy and really wanted to help.

After a long conversation he agreed something strange was wrong with the lock, and sent me a new one.
