That dern stain you used soaked in good! Its taking me more time steaming than usual to get the grain up enough to sand the stain out LOL.

In the end i will use truoil on it, most likely 25 to 30 coats. Very pretty wood that needs to be shown off best as possible.

It's the linseed it actually darkens wood like stain and penetrates. remember it was strictly a hunting rig. i didn't care about fancy anything. you do good stock work and it should look really nice tru oiled.. can't wait to see it;)

Yeah me too, already trying to figure out if i will strip the bluing and go directly with plum brown barrel and trim. I think it will be easier once i finish the stock and see the color.

MountainDevil54 01-17-2012 07:13 PM

ok the stock is about 85% finished. Tomorrow i am going to reshape the bottom of the wrist section of stock and round it off rather than make it square. Also going to clean up the lock area as well for a little more shape.

Used straight Truoil on the forearm just to test for color... Ooooooh yeah! No stain needed and beautiful wood pattern. Can't wait to get the stock all finished up, the wood is gorgeous throughout and with no stain, its going to pop out right at you.

Barrel and all metal trim WILL get a nice deep plum brown theme. Blue just looks boring and every day on these rifles.

Finished up the wood today and browned all the steel parts except for the barrel and buttplate. I thought the buttplate was blued but its actually painted and so that threw me off until tomorrow when i will strip it and brown it.

2 coats of Truoil on it now and when its wet, man does the wood pop!

Jon, try tung nut oil some time. Thats what I switched to from Trure Oil when I was building and selling.

Some pics of the progress.

Steaming the dents/scratches out of the forearm section.

Just water on the stock to show the wood grain. Truoil really has brought out the wood grain! After i get at least 3 coats on i will let it dry for 24 hours and then wet sand with 600 grit sand paper and do it all again.

And another Sako stock that went back to the owner yesterday.

Good work on both of those stocks. seems your mastering the techniques.

Finished stock, Just have to pick up some wax later on and buff it good.
