Renedage project

Well i almost got everything i need!

Ray sent me his old renegade kit stock as i guess he abused it and let the barrel go to rust :poke: and so he gave it to me under the orders to never sell it as it was his first and so thats no problem! I bought a .50cal barrel for it used and once i have the funds, i am going to buy a barrel blank .54cal fitted for with the TC breech plug. That barrel will need a lot of work but it will be the 54 i've been wanting.

As for the stock, its in really darn good shape, i will have to rework some wood in the wrist area as its a lil to squared off and lumpy at one section, but thats maybe 20 minutes worth of careful file/sand block work.

Thank you Ray, i really appreciate it and Promise never to sell it. I will get her all back into shape and have something to really enjoy for years.

Got to call TC for a hammer screw and then maybe start the stock work.

Pics coming later.

Jon the rifle was in storage for about 8 years and boxed in a shed for another 7-8 years after that.i promise it was never abused, just not used and it rusted, my fault of course.i really like the set double trigger on that rifle. you get the bullets and other items also? enjoy the old gal! Ray

Yep i got everything. I just ordered the hammer screw from dixie as TC said 6 to 8 week wait! That tool you send is awesome! Has everything a hunter would need, including what looks like a little vise grip to remove the stubborn unfired cap.

Once i get it up and running we'll see how this .50cal barrel shoots and if it doesn't do that well, its getting lopped down to 19" to remove some weight!

Yep that tool is great. the ram rod is the original also and never failed me.nothin wrong with a carbine lol.that rifle was shot a lot and downed quite a few elk and even more deer with 90 gr Pyrodex and a .430 gr thumper conical.:party0005:

I'll be trying the REALs in this barrel after its finished. Just took some pictures and finish reshaping the wrist. Time to do what i do best and do the stripping job!

MountainDevil54 01-17-2012 12:59 PM

Oh boy!! I got one side of the rear stock sanded down and then wet it to raise the grain, you talk about some wood grain on this sucker! Friggin gorgeous! No stain will be needed on this one as its a dark walnut.

All that stock is ever had on it was 1 light coat of walnut stain and linseed oil.

MountainDevil54 01-17-2012 01:28 PM

No wonder it came off with only steel wool LOL. Its coming along, about the steam the rear section of the stock to raise the grain up so i don't have to do as much sanding to get the low spots out. Filed the buttplate to fit the stock as well. I am thinking about ordering a white spacer for the buttplate to give it a different look, help highlight it a bit.

It always had a slip on recoil pad on it,due to that hard steel butt plate. the linseed shed water about as well as anything you can buy.

MountainDevil54 01-17-2012 01:40 PM

I may look into a rubber recoil pad later down the road. Maybe see if the recoil pad off my wolf will fit. They only run $20 with shipping so it wouldn't be expensive to put one on if its a close fit.

That dern stain you used soaked in good! Its taking me more time steaming than usual to get the grain up enough to sand the stain out LOL.

In the end i will use truoil on it, most likely 25 to 30 coats. Very pretty wood that needs to be shown off best as possible.

It's the linseed it actually darkens wood like stain and penetrates. remember it was strictly a hunting rig. i didn't care about fancy anything. you do good stock work and it should look really nice tru oiled.. can't wait to see it;)

MountainDevil54 01-17-2012 01:50 PM

Yeah me too, already trying to figure out if i will strip the bluing and go directly with plum brown barrel and trim. I think it will be easier once i finish the stock and see the color.

MountainDevil54 01-17-2012 07:13 PM

ok the stock is about 85% finished. Tomorrow i am going to reshape the bottom of the wrist section of stock and round it off rather than make it square. Also going to clean up the lock area as well for a little more shape.

Used straight Truoil on the forearm just to test for color... Ooooooh yeah! No stain needed and beautiful wood pattern. Can't wait to get the stock all finished up, the wood is gorgeous throughout and with no stain, its going to pop out right at you.

Barrel and all metal trim WILL get a nice deep plum brown theme. Blue just looks boring and every day on these rifles.

MountainDevil54 01-18-2012 09:23 PM

Finished up the wood today and browned all the steel parts except for the barrel and buttplate. I thought the buttplate was blued but its actually painted and so that threw me off until tomorrow when i will strip it and brown it.

2 coats of Truoil on it now and when its wet, man does the wood pop!

lemoyne 01-19-2012 05:08 AM

Jon, try tung nut oil some time. Thats what I switched to from Trure Oil when I was building and selling.

MountainDevil54 01-19-2012 02:07 PM

Some pics of the progress.

Steaming the dents/scratches out of the forearm section.

Just water on the stock to show the wood grain. Truoil really has brought out the wood grain! After i get at least 3 coats on i will let it dry for 24 hours and then wet sand with 600 grit sand paper and do it all again.

And another Sako stock that went back to the owner yesterday.

builder459 01-19-2012 02:17 PM

Good work on both of those stocks. seems your mastering the techniques.

MountainDevil54 01-25-2012 01:36 PM

Finished stock, Just have to pick up some wax later on and buff it good.

dirt1008 01-25-2012 01:43 PM

Very nice looking stock MD.

builder459 01-25-2012 01:55 PM

Excellent work jon.....

MountainDevil54 01-25-2012 02:02 PM

Yeah I cant wait to pull the barrel out of the coffee grinds tomorrow and put that on. Just have to finish the buttplate afterward and shes complete.
