Got a problem wih my Mountaineer.
It seems that it only kills 5x5's. I filled my rifle tag today and once again it was a 5x5 whitetail. I love rifle season though because I can scope my muzzleloader , which sure makes it easier. I will get photos posted later . Now all I can hunt are doe until the Dec muzzy season. The wife has a whitetail buck tag so I guess I can spend time helping her. 500 points for team 1. , but I won't be much help now til Dec 8th except for a doe here or there. Will post photos and info later this evening
|
I don't think I would send the rifle back for a problem like that. I would consider changing professions and become a hunting guide if I were you. I'm looking forward to the photo's, congratulations.
|
congratulations.. on a terrible problem rifle. I could cure that and hide it at my house for you. Then you would not be reminded of it...
|
Only 5x5's?
I'd sell it. :p |
Photos of todays deer.Knight Mountaineer. 120 gr blackhorn 209
250 gr bloodline bullet. Winchester primer, Nikon Omega BDC scope. 207 yards prone from bipod . He only went 20 yards and collapsed. Now I will spend time helping find the wife a deer til muzzy season. I had planned on finding a Mulie for my rifle tag but I just didnt have the necessary resraint to pass on this guy. Hopefully I will get a mulie with my muzzy tag in december. ![]() ![]() |
In Colorado that's called a 5 point.
We underplay everything here. |

glad we aint in Colorado. here its a 5x5 . Kinda wish I was back east. it would be a 10 point then. That sounds even better:biggrin:
I mailed this back at him.... In the West where we do things right... that is not a 10 point!!!! it is 5 point or 5x5... Wish you guys in the east would figure that out :confused0024: |
I don't understand why you guys out West are unable to count points. What, are you afraid the numbers will get too big to handle? :s2: A point is a point. Ten points are ten points.
What do you call a whitetail with 4 points on one side and 2 on the other? A four, or a two? Even semi-sane people know it's a six. |
We don't pronounce the "e" in coyote either.
We like to be different. :D |
you tell them semi lol

Chet, Can I borrow it for an elk hut? I'd settle for a 5x5 elk. That is a nice deer. Congrats.

Congrats on the kills!!!!!

I thought it was a mule deer that was called a 4x4 if it had 4 points on each antler. And a white tail was always called by the total number of points on both antlers no matter where you are from?
|
i count all points on a deer. Like the Colorado DOW booklet tells you to do. ;)
|
I will always be a Wyomingite at heart. Currently I'm a Minnesotan by wife. I will always refer to my deer as a 2x2 or a 5x5 or whatever it may be. Here's the best I can figure it.
First, how many deer have you seen that have a different number of points on each side? It's much more descriptive to tell how many points are on each side. Just saying it's a 10 point could imply that there's one weird antler growing straight out of the middle of its head and it has 10 stickers growing out of it. The other reason, and I suspect this is probably more likely, is it makes the deer bigger. Example: If you measure a room, you give the dimensions of each side, such as 5'x5'. But technically the room is 25'. Using the same very obvious math, Chets deer is 5 points x 5 points. So Chet, you can refer to your deer as a 5x5 because your humble, but in all honesty that would be a 25 point. |

We are economical with just about everything, including words. When a fella comes into hunting camp to share stories by the fire, he say i killed me a 6 point bull today; or he say i killed a 5 point whitetail this morning. The vast majority of mule deer are 4 point bucks. Some are big, some are old, some are young, some are small. Usually a mule deer buck is a 4 point, unless it is a fork horn. We talk this way, because our dad, grandpa, or uncle did. We haven't thought about why. A possible 'why', may be whilst hunting, and one sees a bull, or a buck, one quick glance at the antlers reveals to the 'seasoned' hunter a 4 point buck, or a 5, or 6 point bull without counting. The seasoned hunter doesn't count points as he is getting ready to shoot, he just glances at the antlers, and 'knows' it is a 4 point mule deer, or a 6 point bull. Westerners don't seem to waste effort. Westerners don't walk when they can ride, nor stand when they can sit, nor count when they 'know'. Ma may still think me lazy, but i think me is economical. |

FWIW, I don't count points when I see buck. I do that after they are on the ground :s4: and I can take as much time as I like then. |
I may get in trouble for this but it might be antlers with over 10 points they have to take their shoes off to count and its cold out there!
Thus counting points using one hand works better. JW |
You're in trouble.

Doesn't bother me.
You know what Popeye says. I yam what I yam. |
The difference in language and even the mannerisms we use in our day to day lives vary greatly from one part of the nation to the next. To me this is what makes the United States such a fascinating place. The language we use is really interesting when you begin to study it.
Semisane would tell you the name of the city he lives in, and people in the Northern end of the country would laugh out loud because he can't read simple words. Is a can of Pepsi a soda, or a pop? In office buildings do you drink from a fountain or a bubbler? And whether a buck deer is a 4 point mule deer or a 8 point mule deer would depend on where you live. For instance, I was showing some of the beautiful mule deer you people shoot to my father. And he immediately counted all the points. An elk is a 4x3 or a 5x5 I can understand that. I like the fact we are different. But whether we are from New York or California, no matter the color of our skin, or the deity we pray to, or in some cases choose not to... if you were born or naturalized in this country.. you're an American. Now back to that rifle you want to send me.... :s4: |
Well said Cayugad. Heck, it even includes Muley (if you're feeling generous).
