Default BlackHorn Powder Question

Hey guys Im switching from pellets to the Blackhorn lose powder this year and just curious how to clean the gun. I have a Traditions Yukon and this will be only my second hunt with it. I have heard use regular gun oil like Hoppe #9. So I was going to use that on the barrell and soak my breech plug in a windex alcohol mix. Will this work? Also Im going to start with 100 grains behind a Horady 300 gr low drag round. You think 150 yrds is out of reach with this set up?Also does anyone else us the Blackhorn? Thanks.

I think most of us use BH 209. Clean it just like you'd clean smokeless powder. That includes the BP. If you use Hoppe's 9. Don't use the one made for black powder, or any other cleaner made for black powder.

Your load will be fine at 150yds.

With Blackhorn 209 you should use solvent. Not water based products. There are some good solvents out there. I always used Montana Xtreme Cowboy Solvent. But Hoppe's #9 will work, Birchwood Casey Bore Scrubber will also.

Thanks for the quick replies. Cayugad I believe you have my same gun, do you have any suggestions on the load I mentioned in my first post. I used XTP 245 grain bullets and 2 pellets of pyrodex two years ago when I shot a doe but didnt get pass through at 35 yds.

When I shot BlackHorn 209 out of my Genesis, I shot the 250 grain Barnes Expanders. I used 90 grains of it. Accuracy was outstanding. I have no doubt in the quality of the bullet. I think a pass through on a whitetail would be almost guaranteed. I also shot some 250 grain Shockwaves with Blackhorn 209 and again, excellent accuracy.

I have never shot powerbelts out of my Genesis. Although I purchased two packs of them yesterday a Gander Mountain (on sale for $11.89 for the 348 grain copper jacket) and might try a couple.

With a similar barrel lengthand load "0"
yd velocity Ft# drop
150 1366 1243.6 -4.76
yours should be similar if you use a tight fitting bullet sabot combo, this makes a big difference with BH.

I use Butch's Bore Shine. My barrel is spotless. And the final patches come out as white as they go in.

I am also a recent convert. Never thought I would say it, but I am. That stuff really works great in my Knight LRH. I was very impressed with it. Tom.

birchwood casey 2 in 1 cleaner. No stinky smell and normally a 2 patch clean up with BH209.

Do yourself a favor and make things easier on yourself. When you go to clean, run 2 or 3 DRY patches that tight real snug. This removes all the loose fouling from the bore and the solvent will get to the carbon a lot easier and remove it faster.

I started using one wet patch, let that sit for a few minutes then follow up with a bore brush, run a couple dry patches and then one more wet patch, scrub and dry patch. The 2 in 1 cleaner is some beautiful stuff!

You need a 3mm or #32 drill bit in order to clean the carbon from the breech plug. Just spin it with your fingers and you are good to go. A bronze or stainless tooth brush makes cleaning the fouling on the breech plug very easy.

Don't forget to show pictures of the targets you shoot at. I would love to see how you make out with that rifle and powder.
