Accuracy issue

What would cause a bullet to miss a target by 42 inches left and 17.75 inches low? The group was 6 in a 1.5 inch pattern and then the nasty left and low and one more that was close to 30 inches low. All shot from a shooting bench at 100 yards. I swabbed the bore between each shot and used the same powder and primers.
I changed to a different bullet and never had another issue and the group tightened up too, but I am not sure if this bullet is the right one for hunting.
Thanks,
Michael

Possibly 'pellets' but actually which powder were you using? And as some one said a massive failure in the scope system...
Which shot in the string was it that went so bad?

The scope was good because the follow up shots were in the good group. The sequence was not as I listed them. I guess that is a little confusing. The two bad shots were mixed in with the good.
I was trying to fine tune my son's CVA Wolf using 60 grains of Pyrodex Select, CCI primers and the trouble bullets were 223 grain Powerbelts. My assumption is damaged bullets or I got them started crooked or something like that.

with the platinums, the flat base of the skirt actually sticks to the bullets. That very well could have been the problem, especially with such a light charge.

Maybe that was the problem. It shot the last batch of Powerbelts perfectly and that was with a 50 grain charge. I switched him to a 200 grain shockwave and they are grouping great, but I am concerned about terminal ballistics with that load. He will be limited to 75 yards max with a likely shot of 20-30 yards. I have him hunting out of one of my bow hunting blinds.

Im No Fan of Powerbelts, but try upping the charge to al least 70-80gr's and see if it tightens up. I would consider trying a 10mm 200gr XTP and about 70gr's of Pyro and see if that helps. It a very accurate bullet out f a CVA with minimal recoil and with the low Powder Charge it should do the job just fine out to 100yds.
Scrap the Powerbelts and do You and your Son a Favor.

I am using a 200 grain shockwave now and the groups are awesome. He wants to try 75 grains of powder, so we will give it a shot and see how he handles the recoil. I think it will be fine, but I don't want to make him " gun shy" either. He is only 7 years old so his judgement is not always the best. He wants to increase his charge to 75 grains because that is what his Mom is shooting and he can't let a girl shoot a heavier load than he does.
