120gr shoots decent in my Accura with a thor, not the best accuracy that i get with 100 grain. Now sabots on the other hand!!


Gosh that hawken shot so good i am going out again here in a bit to do a bit more shooting with it.

You will very rarely see me post less then 120grns of BH209. I follow the reccomended loads from the gun manufacture. You should try it sometime, sure beats mixing two powders together.

Not to butt in on the spat, but it sure would be interesting to see some pressure readings with straight Blackhorn and with a duplex load.

I can see three possibilities.

(1) Five grains of JSG and a #11 cap may provide significant more ignition flash than a 209 primer, and may change the burning characteristics of BH to a significant and potentially dangerous extent. (Could that account for the significant recoil?)

(2) The differences between the two ignitions sources are not so great as to effect the burning characteristics of BH.

(3) The differences are significant, but it doesn't effect the BH anyway.

I'd give you the answer. But frankly, I don't know squat.

Just one thing to add in the brain teaser you posted...

BH is not the normal BP or even BP sub - It is a Nitro based powder...Which reacts totally different to burning rates and pressure of the object holding it in place.

Also just to throw this out, I believe Hodgdon recommends no more than 100 grains of their powder. In todays world it is safer that way. Then you go to the rifle companies specs and with that Grose is within the rifle companies specifications. Other than Savage I think they are the only company that OK's 150 grains of T7. Even Doc stopped at 120 grains but privately you can shoot a lot more of it than that in a White. You would not believe what he had to do to burst a White Barrel.

It's fine for you, not anyone else at all. Here is one example out of a T/C manual.
