I have a couple of FL's. One is an older Charles Daly thatI bough back in the 70's. It is a great round ball shooter.

The second rifle is a Lyman rifle. But I can not remember which model it is.I think it is the Hunter model, but I can not remember.

So I am going to show my ignorance, and ask a stupid question. Would some one please identify the rifle in the picture, and would you happen to know the twist. I want to work up a cast bullet load for it, and this basic information would be a great beginning. Please forgive my ignorance!! I really think I have old timer's disease??Tom.

Both of my Lymans have the barrel stamped on the right side. If it is says Great Plains Rifle it is 1:60 twist and if it says Great Plains Hunter it is 1:32. If your barrel isn't stamped then you will have to check the twist because the lock, stock, etc are the same on both models. Only the twist rate is different..If you have a jag that turns it is easy to check the twist. My Lyman Hunter loves the Hornady Great Plains bullet 425gr. with 90 to 100 gr powder .( 54 cal)

I just looked at the photo. That rifle doesn't have double triggers so it couldn't be a Great Plains rifle. It has to be the Trade rifle or Deerstalker.They both have a 1:48 twist. The trade rifle has a longer barrel. It is 28" the deerstalker is 24".

Looking at the picture, it has a single trigger. I am guessing its a Lyman Trade Rifle. Check the barrel length. The Trade Rifle has a 28 inch barrel and the DeerStalker had a 24 or 26 inch barrel. Both the Deerstalker and the Trade Rifle have a 1:48 twist. They shoot roundball or conicals very well.

You guys jarred my old timers disease. It is a Deer Stalker. It already shoots round balls very well. I can keep them in a 2-3 inch group at 100 yards with 80 grains of 3F Black Powder. However I want to work up a heavier conical load for this rifle. I have a RCBS Hotchkiss adjustable mold that is set at 525 grain bullets right now. I might try and lighten that bullet up a bit to around 400 grains. that should be a dandy, if I can lighten the mold up that much. I need to slug the bore first. Who knows I might just buy a new mold?? Tom.

Very well indeed HEAD. I have not been able to get that kind of group at 100 yards with my Great Plains. But I'm sureit's more a matter of eyesight and iron sights than a fault of the gun.

Dumb question. Is it a lefty or did you reverse the photo?
