Default Does patch out do a good job of cleaning bp rifles?

I use this stuff to clean my rifles. This or Hoppes 9 and I really like it.

I have a few other things but that's mostly what I have and use. Now I let a friend shoot my black powder rifle a few times as he had never shot one before. So it needs a cleaning. In the past on my old one I used water and soap. This one I haven't shot much. After shooting it the first few times I use this Patch Out to clean it. Now that it needs cleaning again is this stuff okay to use? It seems to get a lot of powder out but want to make sure it gets the gun good enough. Since it's what I have can I use it or will it not remove all that needs removing on a black powder rifle?

To be sure the barrel is good and clean get a brass brush and run it through a few times using good old soap and water, then follow with a good quality oil and you should be good to go. Best of luck. BP

I have never used the stuff. But I also do not normally treat a rifle for lead, copper, and plastic residue unless I believe the rifle needs it. Normally if it is just fouling, simple soap and water will take care of that in most cases. BUT if that stuff works, I sure am not going to tell you not to use it. The main thing is.. you're comfortable using the product.

I like it in the rifles and the reason I like it is when one of my rifles was shooting crappy I decided to try this from a recommendation of a local gunsmith. I thought I had been cleaning the rifle but this stuff got all kinds of crap out of it. Did it fix the accuracy problem? No. Found out it was picky about ammo. However, it did get it a lot cleaner than I had ever gotten it. Sometimes I use this and sometimes Hoppes 9 but I think it works fairly well.

I just didn't know if it would remove the black powder as well that's why I was asking. I always used the soap and water method on my old muzzle loader but have used this when I cleaned my new one. I guess I'm using it this time too. Not sure what I will try next. It's just what I have on hand and easier than soap and water but it does cost a bit more.

I'm not sure about this stuff now though as they changed the bottles slightly and you can tell it's a different product. It smells differently and just feels differently on my hands. I'm not sure what they changed so I hope this new bottle works as well as the last ones I've used.

I can't say this stuff is the best or anywhere near it just that I like it about the best out of what I've used. Although once or twice I've gotten a few things out with Hoppes 9 that this seemed to miss but other times I like this stuff better. Especially if you let it sit a bit.

Should I give the Cowboy cleaning stuff a try that you guys seem to like? Or what's the best product to try out next?

I have been using the Montana X-treme products and like them, but if you are going to shoot black powder, swab the stuff out with alcohol before you shoot. I can't swear to it, but I had some nasty fouling one day. Whether it was the MX that caused it I can not say. It might have been the rotten weather conditions.
