anyone ever test or use oil like MOBIL ONE FOR PATCH LUBE.

I DONT THINK SYN OIL HAS PETROLEUM OIL IN IT.

never thought about synthetic oil... I am going to try it... I have some Slip 2000 gun oil with is sysnthetic and contains NO petroleum products....

same here,it is not to have PETROLEUM oil in it,could be cheap way to have great patch lube.

i would guess that the lightest weights would be best,dont know if they make a straight10 w in syn.

you could take a whole strip of pillow tick and soak it and wring it out and let it dry.

i dont believe it would freeze in winter also.

then cut it at barrel.

if syn oil can work good as patch lube, my gosh, you can buy 5 quarts at wal-mart for 16 dollars in jug.

this could be better than moosemilk things and also protect your bore more than the homemade liquids used.

you could dunk your pillow ticks in it, wring it out and let dry.then cut at barrel.

It'd be interesting but I wonder.....synthetic oils may not be made from Crude oil but they are hydrocarbons in the same family, just a more orderly molecular structure. They are mineral oils as opposed to vegetable based oils. I expect that the same issues that result from "petroleum" contamination will occur with synthetics.

Pete D basically has it right. Just because an oil claims to be "synthetic" does not rule out that it may be "synthetic" made from petroleum. The term basically means that the original source, whether it be mineral or vegetable has been broken down into chemical groups and then recombined to leave out undesirable portions and include the desirable ones for the purpose intended. Personally I suspect that Mobil One is petroleum based for derivatives. For patch lube Ballistol is my preferred selection and also works well as a barrel protection during storage. All this being said you obviously can experiment all you want and the old belief that petroleum oils will not work with muzzleloaders is not completely true. It seems to be more of a problem with real black powder rather than some of the substitutes.

OX-YOKE patchs use a MINERAL OIL.

how could it be proven that a SYN oil would contaminate as a PETRO oil would.

OX-YOKE has been using the MACHINE MINERAL OIL for long time, does not mean its right thing.
