Default Perfect performance from Gold Dot once again

Ever since Sabotloader put me on these 300 gr. Speer Gold Dots I find myself wanting to hunt more and more with my Omega, even during the rifle season here in Tennesse. The performance of this bullet is so incredibly reliable and a perfect fit for the thick bottoms and cutover I hunt around here.

This morning I shot this big-bodied7-pointer at a laser-measured 69 yards, standing still and quartering slightly toward me. There was no wind so I couldn't see the deer's initial reaction to the shot because of the smoke. Eventually I saw him running like a scalded cat back into the thick stuff and I began to doubt myself. Going over it in my mind the shot picture looked good, the crosshairs were steady behind the point of the shoulder 1/2 way up, everything seemed OK except the fact that the deer took off like a bat out of Hades. Strange considering the fact that none of the four other deer I've shot with this bullet in the past two seasons made it more than 20 yards.

Reloaded and waited a few minutes. Couldn't stand it any longer so I walked down to where the deer was standing at the shot and I was relieved to see a nice spew pattern of blood. Looking toward the thicket where the deer ran I could easily see the blood trail on the still-frosted switchgrass. Long story short, the deer made it about 125 yards spewing a blood trail my 6 year-old daughter in the picture below could follow. The POI was exactly where I aimed and the bullet caught both lungs and a portion of the front lobe of the liver. In one side and out the other with a quarter to half-dollar-sized exit wound. Perfect bullet performance in my book and exactly what I desire in a hunting bullet. Gotta have that blood trail to find the deer in the jungle I hunt.

All hail the Gold Dot, King of the muzzleloader bullets.

Once again, thanks Sabotloader !!!!

That's a nice deer. And I have yet to shoot one with a Speer but I do have a load worked up for it. My Genesis likes a Speer HP .458 in an orange MMP sabot with 100 grains of Pyrodex P. That should get the job done I hope.

Cayugad

The thing I like about these 300gr Gold Dots is the predictability and reliability of their performance. I've gotten a large exit would every time with good blood (with the exception of a deer shot front1on and that bullet transversed the entire body and hung in the skin on the back flank - I've posted the picture of that recovered bullet several times). They open quickly, stay together and go out the other side. The icing on the cake is that they are reasonably priced in boxes of 50 from Midway so I can practice with them without breaking the bank. They shoot very accurately from my Omega with the HPH-24 sabot in front of 115-120 gr of loose 777. Their performance has been perfect on shots that varied from 9 yards to 164 yards.

Can you tell thatI love this bullet !!!!!!!!!

Chasam kind of said it all.. it is nice when you have a bullet that you are very confident in. I think that is a good thing. You know the rifle and trust the load. That's kind of what this is all about.

I have not shot one yet with a Speer, but would be more then willing to try. Now if only the deer would cooperate.
