Default .54 maxi-ball loads..............

I've been fooling around with my 1-70 GM barrel and misplaced my data for the 430gr .54 maxi-ball.I found a gently used TC 1-48 factory barrel and need to try it out.I think loads ran from 90gr-120gr of FFG.Anyone have a pet load? I'm also using a felt wad under the home cast slugs. The barrel that was on the Renegade when I bought it is badly rusted out internally.Thanx Harold

90 gr of FFg was doing ok with the 430 gr Maxiball but a change to 80 gr of FFFg tightened up the groups quite a bit. 3" high at 50 yds put me dead on at 100 yds. (at least as dead on as the old eyes could keep it)

I shoot 100 gr of Pyrodex loose. My Renegade 54 Cal shoots Maxiballs very well. Never triedwads.

I shot about 3" three shot groups at 75 yards with both 90 + 100gr of FFG and a Buffalo felt wad.Didn't seem to make much difference accuracy wise.I'm sure it's just me and my eyesight as the barrel looks near mint.Hate to admit it but I need a scope these days.........................Harold PS what bullet lube are you using! I was just using Crisco

That sounds likesome very nice groups.
I saw a fellow postthat hewould only put Crisco into the bottom lubegroove of his Maxi's because he believedthatthey shot more accurately than when all of the grooves were loaded withit.
The otherpopular commercial lubeis WonderLube or Bore Butter, unless you want to melt some beeswax in withthe Crisco. But depending on your weatherduring deer season,a beeswax mixwillbe harder/stiffer in cold weather as would the Wonder Lube/Bore Butter because itcontains paraffin.
Otherwise it's basically justmineral oil.
