So Lee,...What I hear you say is just what I've experienced and pondered for awhile now.The Shock Wave,SST type bullets are designed more for long range targets, maybe in the 100yd.plus range. And the Gold dots,Partition style projectiles are more suited for 25-80yd range.I've taken 3 deer with Sh.Wvs. and had to go find all of them. Now I know somebody's gonna say they have had deer drop in thier tracks. And I don't doubt it.Just my experience I'm familiar with. But I have also taken several with Gold Dots and 2 with Nosler partitions and I watched them go down.Again I put the round when possible in the crease and the "pointy" bullets go straight thru for me.I hunt with 90-110 gr.of T72f.Am I close with my deduction?

Kinda the way I look at it, of course the most important thing is always accuracy, but you really need to drive the "pointy" bullets at just the right speed for optimum results, to me they work well at extreme velocity or at slower velocity they seem to only open part way before they get through in the medium velocity but for up to 150 yds the 250 gold dot is a real stop them in there tracks bullet in my experience, for some reason the 200 gr SW has been real good for me at all ranges. I suspect that the 2250 fps that I normally shoot it at is the reason. Lee

The core bonded bullets are very good but even they do have reduced penetration when used at high speed and close range.
thats exactly what I found out.. Ive shot some good deer at under 20 yards and didnt get a exit. I was shooting the bonded shockwaves. I recently switched back to the plain shockwaves in hops that they expand a bit more and drive deeper. Neither deer went over 45 yards and blood trailing was still easy. I just like double holes better though.

huntman, I dont shoot many deer but out of 4 I have mounted in the past 3 years Ive had 2 drop and 2 go 40 yards. one was 65 yards out while the other 3 deer were under 20 yards. So its 50/50 on dropping or running, but that will depend on the shot placement also. As long as I get a good blood trail im happy and the shockwaves have done that. I recovered 2 of the sabots on 2 of them which were implanted in the opposite shoulder and the bonded had a hard time expanding but still did the job.
