Default 50 cal GM LRH

Took the 50 cal percussion LRH out today to try the 240 gr .44 cal bullets with the 50/44 crush rib sabots. Bullets shot well but way high - like 8" with rear sight at it lowest setting. I tried different charges of triple 7 and Pyrodex RS. The bullets I was using were 240 gr cast SWC and Hornady XPTs.
I went back to shooting the 320 gr REAL and they were shooting moderately well. I just may have to go back to the 275 gr Maxi Hunters that shot very good out of this barrel.
Odd thing is that these 320 gr REALS shot excetional out of the 21" LRH barrel and out of the 32" Lyman GP Hunter barrel.
HMMM - while typing this, I realized that both the 21" and the Lyman rifles are flinters. Maybe I will have to try the old fashion Goex FFg. Oh well -something to try next weekend.

I got my GMB dirty for the first time yesterday. Tried 44 cal XTP300 gr / hornady green sabot over 110 goex 2f not happy. Too much charge i think. Also tried great plains 385 gr over 90 gr 2f much better. best results of the day were with... you guessed it 320 gr REAL over 90 gr 2f. 5 shot group under a loonie (Canadian dollar coin) Maybe I was just getting used to the fiber optic sights. I don't really like them asI get a double image of each light dot even with one eye closed. More homework is probably needed but I get the feeling the REAL 320s are my best load for now.

Gearheart - you just about have me convinced. I wasn't too convinced that there was much difference between Pyrodex, Triple 7 and BP FFg. But it looks pretty obvious now. The Goex FFg and the 320 REALs shot great out of the Lyman and the LRH 21" flinters. But this bullet with basically the same barrel but longer in percussion using Pyrodex and Triple 7 did not fare out so well.

I'm not surprised. My New Englander shoots OK with Pyrodex, but great with GOEX.

GH,

Where did you get your GP 385's. Did you get them in Ontario?

Looks like I will be making smoke with FFg and FFFg next week sometime. I will have to take a couple of days off though. The old shouder is a tad sore. I went through almost an entire bottle of Triple 7 plus some Pyro. RS today trying to get that rifle to shoot the .44 cal bullets and the 320 REALs. Shooting 80, 90 and 100 grcharges. But on the bright side, I only had one misfire the entire afternoon. Cap went off but charge didn't. New cap and bang. And I think it was my fault for not tapping the stock to get some powder close to the snail.

One of my 50 GMLRH rifles like a 456 gr500 S&W bullet paper patched over 80 gr of pyrodex P. The more I use the pyrodex P the more I like it. I tried the T7 but I could not get the type of groups I was looking for. I want my rifles to be under 2" at 100 yards with peep sights. I also want to be able to shoot a 5 shot group without cleaning. I get this with the paper patched bullet and Pyrodex P. Ron
