Default Using the powder pellets ????How to's

I have never used anything except Goex powder in granual
form...So tell me if there are any big benifits in the pellets
except the ease of loading...Do they burn cleaner or is this
a myth? Are they as consistent in burn rate so as the keep
a steady muzzle velocity...Suppose you wanted to tweek the
load some, can you cut the pellets in half...What about the cost
of them? So many questions.....Who makes the best ones?

Hay---Dave----we got 4 big doe's so far.....

One more thing. Do the pellets work good for any bullet or
ball combination????????

Pellets work good for people who like convenience and have never used BP. You have used BP, go loose 777. Pellets work good at 100g in most rifles, but as you know this may not be the most accurate load for the rifle. You can buy some 50g and 30g and try 80 with a 50 and a 30 or try 3 30g for a 90g, 2 50g for 100 g load, 2 30g and 1 50g for a 10g load. Now the down side of all that is
keeping two kinds of pellets of the same type and not getting them mixed up. That is pretty easy with speed loaders, but how do you shoot 95g, that makes you go loose. In general 30 and 50g pellets work but you will get more power and better ignition from loose powder.

Burning cleaner, no. Cut some off, how do you know how much you cut off? If you wanna try 80 to 150 do the following

50 + 30 = 80g
3 30= 90g
2 50= 100g
50 + 2 30's = 110g
4 30 for 120
2 50 + 1 30 for 130
1 50 + 3 30s for 140
3 50s for 150g

Oh, what ever load you end up with make sure you place some tape as a witness mark on your ramrod. I use tape, since I change things and scraping different marks with different bullets and loads gets confusing fast. Also take picture of your targets and name them like
300g Barnes Origonal CR sabot Win Primer 100g 777 2008_08_13,
here are some ideas to organize your PC:

Pellets are about 2x the cost of loose. Stay with loose.

I have to agree with Chap. I prefer loose to pellets. I use the loose in the Pyrodex RS and P. And with my powder measure, I can adjust my charge in 10 gr increments to find my optimum load. Some measures have finer graduations. You can't do that too well with pellets. Last I seen they come in 50 and 30 gr sizes - at least the 50 cal ones.

I prefer Goex FFF for all my muzzleloaders as well...

I have used Pyrodex R-S and 777 in the past because WalMart was "giving" it away...
The Pyrodex was OK, I have no use for 777...

I can buy a pound of Goex for $11.55 and I need them for my 2 flintlocks anyway, why pay more???

The only advantage of pellets I can see

Some rifles seem designed for shooting pellets and provide excellent accuracy with two or three pellets.

For the occasional shooter of say one range session and a couple days hunting a year, pellets can be bought fresh each year, used to test the rifles accuracy and then shot off during the hunting season. So the one time expense is like buying a box of cartridges for your centerfire rifle in that case.

They load easier and can be carried in speed loaders so the whole idea of measures, etc is no longer necessary.

Down side..

The cost.

Not alway as accurate as loose powder

No cleaner burn or savings in the clean up department

Which ones are better

Only your rifle can tell you that. I personally like the Pyrodex RS pellets.

I have to add a bit to the down side, they have never chrony as consistant as well measured volume measured loose in any of my guns though they shot well enough in some guns. Lee
