Unless your dad just wants to shoot #11 or musket caps, he might want to consider buying the 209 conversion from Cabela's. I've never heard anything bad about them. I have read and heard reports of people having iginition problems w/the 700's until they converted. That seemed to cure it.
Just an idea to think about.

Go back and ask the guy if he gave you everything. My 700ML had nipples for 3 different primers. Musket caps, #11s, and the 209 shotgun primers. I would suggest going with the 209s if at all possible. They will almost totally eliminate the chance of a mis-fire.

Boy that is cheap for a conversion, the Knight "regular disc" to the new red Disc is like $100 at Cabelas. I would go with that just from the hotter iginition and less than $50 (1/2 tank of gas).

The Remington 700 will work just fine with either #11 primers or Musket primers as long as you follow the manuals cleaning instructions for the bolt.
I bought this bolt take down tool at Gander Mountian for $10.00, makes life so much simpler.




Sabotloader recommends a stronger spring in the bolt also. I think he has posted brownells for the #24 spring.

I agree alleyyooper, the bolt is something I think people overlook. The guyI got mine from kept the gun spotless except for the bolt. I don't know if he didn't realize it got that dirty or just didn't know how to take it down.. Nonetheless, it was quite dirty. That take down tool is a gift from heaven. The whole, vice and a coin thing is a joke after using one of the tools.

A stronger spring couldn't hurt either. I changed out the factory one in mine to the Cabela's one. I don't know how stout it is though.

The factory springs that come with the Rem 700 ML are #24 and are a weak 24 at that.

This is a much stronger spring than comes from the factory. I have changed several of thse out and it makes all the difference in the world when shooting caps. BUT, becareful of dry firing - the strength of this spring will get to the nipple sooner or later.

I found this Remington 700 ML 209 replacement nipple at http://muzzleloadingbullets.com/remi...9_nipples.html It also talks about being able to use the Variflame primer adapter with it. Hope this helps.

That appears to be the Canadian nipple built for the 700ml... I just ordered a couple to check, but if it is the Canadian nipple it probably will not work with the Remington hammer - you will need the Canadian hammer also...

There is a difference... You can see a picture of the kit here... what you can not see is the face of the hammer is not cupped like the Remington...

I bought a Remington 700ML new in 1997 black & stainless, love the gun and it shoots great, however what I wanted was the one 700ML that the "Remington" custom shop offered with a beautiful wood thumbhole stock. I've looked for a "used" one being Remington does not offer this model anymore. Does anyone know of one that may be for sale? Or doess any one make wood thumbhole stocks for the 700ML ?
