home made hunting blind idea

thinking of building an portable hunting blind.

pvc pipes are my first choice to place the outer material.

burlap for the cover.

the pvc should make it light enough to be carried by one person. pvc joints make it able to be taken down. pvc would let me add on to it, if I want to make it larger to fit more people.

use an old camp chair bag to carry it.
still gotta do some price checking to see if it does save some money. wally world has a pop up for $40.

what ya think?

What I've done before is get the fabric of choice (burlap or camo mesh, etc.) and carry that. I then find my spot and use small trees or fallen limbs to arange and hang the fabric overor between as needed to hide behind. Some times I don't even need the fabric due to the foliage around me. I feel natural surroundings are less noticable to the wildlife than a new and unfamiliar structure, I've seen deer walk over and inspect a piece of trash on the ground that looked out of place. Remember, your hunting where they live 365 days a year, they know when something looks out ofplace.

A good quiet seat is also nice to have rather than sitting on the ground, I'm getting stiff in my old age. Also clear the ground of leafs and sticks that can make noise when you move around. Good luck with it.

This is my favorite portable deer blind. It is heavy at 22 pounds to carry though. The frame is 3/4" PVC pipe useing 45 degree elbows, T's and 4 way spiders. I bought it ready made in 1994 from a company in Troy Michigan. I believe they went out of bussness in 1999.

I like it because from day one I didn't need to do more than set it up and hunt. I do set it up in Oct. and do not use it till the Muzzle loader season in Dec. I don't brush it in either what you see is how it sets. The door zipper never freezes even if it gets cold after a heavy rain.

This is one of my 2 Ameristep dog house blinds. This one is floorless. The other has a floor that zippers so you could use it as a ice fishing house too, I guess you could them all. They are not my favorite blinds but much better than some of the Chinese ones. Buy them early as you need to seal all the sew seams or they leak like a sole less boot. You also need to really lube the fine tooth zippers as they will freeze up at the drop of a snow flake. I rub mine full of bees wax to repel the water. If it snows during the night and warms during the day the snow melts and runs right in the zippers and will freeze in the late day when it cools down.
They are how ever lighter than the PVC one cost less also to buy. Set up is a snap and I can even fold the floorless one up to fit back inside the back pack the one with the floor is another story how ever.I wouldbuy them again only if they put some type of flap over the zippers that repeled water.

I also set these up in Oct and don't use them till Dec. I will some times move them during the Dec hunt but I brush them in a bunch.

I bought a blind from Wal Mart that comes in a nice carry bag you throw on your back like a pack. When you get to the spot you want, simply take it out of the bag, throw it on the ground and it pops right up. I carry tent stakes, and stake down the sides to the ground, and put a plastic rubbermade lawn chair inside. I sit in there with my shooting sticks and the rifle rests out the small slit in the front. I've had deer walk within ten feet of it and a grouse I thought was going to join me one day. Mine sat frozen to the ground all winter because of early snow. This spring I walked out, pulled the stakes, and it folded right up and back in the bag. It costed $39.00

did some price hunting. just between the pvc and burlap (not including fittings) are as much as the one at wally world

think I'll go that way. gives more time to shoot

Great idea, but as you can see, mass produced blinds aren't that expensive and easier to fold/carry than most homemade. Keep thinking though!

i thought the same thing good idea
But like rhody hunter said pvc not cheap now a days.
I am remodeling my house and trust me it is high right now. i would think you could build the frame with about 50 to 75 dollars worth of pvc then 20 or 30 of pvc. right there your up to 100 bucks a 100 bucks buy a nice pop up blind.
I could see doing ti to leave in a area but with the light weight of the pvc you could move it easy enough in one peice.
One idea i had though not portable. was some 1/4 inch osb/plywoodtake some 2x4 sink them in the ground and nail the osb to the 2bys.
There your talking 4 2x4s three piece of osb for three side $6 right now a sheet for the osb 2.22 for each 2x4. so for 30 bucks you got a 8x8 ground blind.

Why should the Chinese thing be a bother? Have you bought a pair of shoes lattly? Where were they made? How about a box of nails or wood screws? Where were the toys you bought for your children or grand children made? Where dose the stuff in your pets food come from?
Don't you shop at Wal Mart like millions of other red blooded Americans?
Haven't you heard it isn't fashonable to read the label and by American or Canadain?
America has laws about industrys spewing crap in the air we breath, the water we drink too. American also has stupid laws that won't allow 8 year olds to get a job to help with the familys food buying ability.
So why wouldyou want tobuy some thing made in a Country like America. Hey we are even sending repusentives to China for the olympics despite the air quailty and what is in the water and their human rights issues.

I built this 4'x4'x 7,8 blind for less than $5.00 although not real portable set up this way.
I got the scrap wood free where they were tearing down an old barn. I bought nails and lag bolts to assemble it at home then take it apart by sections to transport and set it up atmy deer camp. The post I cut from my cedar swamp. The glass for the windows came from a hunting partners old grarage door he was replaceing. The shingles were from a few broken bundles at a lumber yard for free too. I had enough stuff to build two of them.

I have two Double Bull blinds. I hated to pay for them, but they really are great. This is my fifth year using the blind's. I leave them up all year, or at least all season(Bow then rifle then MZ). They still look like new.

However the one I like best is made of T-111 Siding and Owens-Corning shingles. I will have to take a picture of that one. Tom.

Equating the present to The Great Depression is hardly logical on many levels, and if you can't feed your familytoday without forcing your kids to "help" then you've no business having kids in the first place...

If foreign child labor goods horn you up that's your business, but don't expect everyone to march lock step in your warm and fuzzy.........

I found my muzzleloader 100 bucks cheaper then any were else around here there.

People are funny Critters.....

Do you think fuel prices are high because you saved a few bucks at Wally World on your hunting blindand the oil companies think you can afford it now?

Fuel prices are high because China is buying every drop they can get their hands on,driving the market off the charts. They can afford it because we've pumped so much money into their economy buying their cheap crap to save ourselves a couple of bucks. With the higher cost of transporting goods to sale comes a higher cost of those goods...a win/win for the bean counters. Inflate the cost of goods to "cover" the higher cost of shipment and you've just created an easy windfall none of us are willing to realize......

EVERYONE is to blame for that, not just the guy who wants a hunting blind, or a family that needs shoes. There's little choice to buy anything BUT chinese made products these days BECAUSE we've let it go so far into the crapper. We shoulda smartened up a long time ago and fixed it then. Now it's acceptable to keep spending money on chinese goods because we've no other realistic choice....and the vicious cycle continues to spiral downward.

We're our own worst enemy............

Given the choice, which thankfullyI am, I'd rather figure out how to hunt WITHOUT a blind than spend $40 bucks on a cheap POS from Walmart.

YMMV, obviously...........

For $40, i could buy that walmart blind and put 30+ lbs of deer meat in the freezer and not depend on steriod injected meat that you buy from the store.

$40 for meat at walmart gives me what, Maybe 10lbs of meat that has more fat than actual meat.

well after losing my headach what kind of blind do you want something dirt cheap or something inclosed and warm.
I figured out a good idea take some 2x4 plant them in the ground. then you could take 1/4 plywood which cost about 6 bucks a sheet and nail it to the 2x4.
Or use some sticks and limbs to nail to the 2x4 even cheaper then.
Just cut out some shooting holes. it would cost you about 25 bucks for one blind.
You figure one 2x4 for each corner switch comes out to four then three sheets of plywoods.
