I cast my own .458 405 grain from a LEE mold. They normally weigh around 423 grains. Out of pure lead, they shoot well but not at long distances for some reason. I shoot them with the orange Knight/MMP sabot out of a couple rifles. I push them with 100 grains of Goex and out to 100 yards they do real well. But at 50 yards they are deadly. Why the group starts to open so much as I near the 100 yard line I blame more on me then the bullet.

I also shoot a.458 Remington 405 grain flat point. They are even more accurate them my cast bullets. Also while I have never shot a deer with them, I have tested them in different materials to see how they react and expand. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of one of them. They really do a nice job of opening up.

I was going to get some of the 300 grain to try, but they are normally sold out when I go to place an order.

This is what my White Ultra Mag will do with my home casted bullets. But then, that rifle shoots about anything you want to shove down it.. very well.

Doesn't it make more sense to use a bullet designed to handle rifle velocities, atleast when shooting a rifle? Most of the handgun bullets we use were designed to open up at around 1000fps, most Ml'ers are alot closer to 2000 fps. IMO you have to match the bullets for the speed your going to push them. You can throw a 450g hunk of lead and keep the velocity low enough, it works great. However you cant take a bullet made for handguns and try to make it fly flat and fast, its gonna BLOW! The bonded SW is the only one marketed to MLers that will hold up to anything over 100g powder. Everyone tried the powerbelts around here a few years back, what a mess that was. The sst's have given similar results in 200 and 250 grain. You can go fast with a bullet that can handle it, but be careful not to push a pistol bullet that fast or SPLAT! The big hole will on the entrance instead of the exit( if you are lucky enough to get one). I am one of the people that like a big exit and a bigger blood trail, light fast pistol bullets have cost alot of people deer around here. They probably died, but couldn't be found. Just choose your bullets carefully for terminal performance, not just accuracy. Sorry for the rant, I get carried away sometimes.
Your 100% correct. Why didn't the MLer manufacturers recommend the 45-70 bullets? Your correct on the PB also;and also the Pistol bullets, except for "well constructed" pistol bullets. I am trying Barnes Origonals .458 with Crushed Rib Sabot in my Savage for exactly that reason. Best Wishes on your bullet selection, very important.
