Most folks don't know a dang thing about history...Flintlocks were invented in the early 1600s...Balls were already in use and had been at use at least 100 years before in matchlocks and wheel locks...Minies were invented in the mid 1850s...So balls were in use longer than any other projectile...Flintlocks were used as a primary source to ignite powder longer than any other ignition system...

Yep, I have used them in my flintlocks since the mid 1970s...I have a custom .40 for small game and a custom .54 for larger game...They work well...

I figured it was the case that a lot of people still do. I guess just the group that I'm a part of is of the "modern" type where they only hunt w/inlines w/50mm scopes and shoot the latest greatest bullet and powder.-Nothing wrong w/that but that's why it didn't bother me too bad when they were messin' w/me but it did get me to thinking about how many folks still use them.

Yeah, I shoot them alot in my slow twist flinters but have not hunted with them in several years. The saboted rounds carry more energy and are less affected by the wind. I like roundballs for hunting but it does limit my distance to around 75 yards for the .50 caliber.

I use use them in my .54 flintlock. Have not hunted with it yet but I will next year when I get time to work up a load. I have no doubt about the ability of the roundball to take deer effectively.

I have shot thousands of round balls, they are still my choice for all hunting. My underhammer started life as a .45,( Numrich Arms , "The Offhand" was the model 32" barrel) I havetwo 35mm film containers in one of my shooting boxs full of RB,s recoverd from deer from the 45 barrel, I shot it out with over 3000 balls and 20 yrs of use. In 1998 I rebarreled the gun to 58 ( 29 5/5 long )and have shot it threw two coffee cans of .562round balls. I know the ball has limits but I did take an antilope in WY. @ over 150 yrs. with a patched ball. in the .45 I loaded 70 grs. of either FF or Pyro RS and that cronographed @ 1970 FPS. in the 58 I shoot 80 of RS normaly and get a tad over 1400 FPS. I have not ever been able to recover a 58 RB.

My Lyman Deerstalker 50 cal has known only patched round balls and is accurate out to about 100 or a little more. Fun to shoot!!!

Rock Lock, most of the guns I shoot PRB in are 1-66 or 1-48 but I have one I built myself that has a 35.5 inch barrel in 54 cal with a 1-80 twist, and of all the suprising things I have a system one with several barrels and the 50 cal barrel likes round balls its one of the best groupers @ 100 yds I use a .490 ball a ticking patch and 90 gr of Pyrodex P it was kind of a suprise I expected it would only shoot balls good with about half that much powder.
