Default knight disc

I bought a disc 50 cal muzzleloader just before the season started.and have had nothing but headache trying to get the perfect load combination.I think that I have tried everything, hopefully not!!ANYONE that has knowledge of this gun please try to shine some light.I am by no means new to muzzleloading, but this gun is frustrating me. Ilove the gun, help me make it work.

Every muzzle loader I have had has been a chore to find the perfect load combo, say you take 2 knight disc 50 cal like you have, load both of them with with 100 grs or pellets and say a 250 gr. hornady bullet,451dia.and shoot both at say 50 yds neither will hit the same you might get lucky and both be quit similiar but not alike. One might have a very tight group and one may have a big group,or both might not even hit the target.
The best way I have found to find the best load is pick a bullet you want to use,go to the range and try loads say from 80 grs to where ever they start to spread out,you may have to try different types of powder even,it all depends on what size groups you are satisfied with.if nothing in that bullet works you have to go to another one and so on.
Last sumer I spent over $200 bucks trying to get a T/C encore 45 cal. to shoot groups I was satisfied with, never did find anything to shoot in it so I sent it back to T/C waiting to see what they say.
I wanted to shoot small bullets so I worked to get groups I wanted in my encore 50 cal,I didn't just drop a small bullet in and it shot one hole groups,I had to shoot and shoot till I found one that satisfied me.But with a lot of trying many different bullets ( 200 grs and less)and powders and loads till I found what I wanted.Last spring and summer I went through 2 1/2 lbs of 777.1 1/2 lb pyrodex select,2 boxes of pyrodex pellets, and 1 lb of clean shot, and I haven't even a guess to how many different bullets.
every year I see a lot of guys bring their muzzleloaders to the range and set up a target at 50 yds if they get 2 bullets to hit near the bulls eye they are accurate for them and they are ready to hunt.
I have a mk-85 I got when they first came out using a nosler 185 gr bullet and 100 grs of clean shot it will shoot as good as a reg rifle out to 100 yds.have a ruger 77/50 it will shoot very tight groups using bullets Hornady XTP from 180 to 250 gr with 100 grs of cleanshot or 100 grs of pyrodex select. The 50 cal encore shoots with a barnes 195 gr and 100 grs of pyrodex or 100 grs of pellets.
I don't know what all you have tried but if you want try 100 grs of pyrodex or 2 pellets and a 250gr or 300 gr in the barnes bullet,a lot of guns I have seen shot usually shot these with good groups.
Hope this helps.

barely legal,
Don't have the 50 but have the Knight 45.I use Clean Shot powder,NO PELLETS.I've had great luck w/clean shot in this gun!

With a 240-300gr sabot I get good groups w/130gr of loose Clean Shot.I've also used 195-240gr sabot with a max load of 120gr loose powder.I'm slowly workin this gun up to 150-175yrd kill shots.

IMHO you might want to START w/110gr of your choice of loose powder and a 240-300gr bullet.Find your used plastic sabots and inspect for severe blow by,splittin or severe deformation - NOT GOOD.

If your shootin Power Belts and having problem with groups- throw them in trash and buy somethin else. They either group great or fly everywhere.Heard it here, seen it and been there with them bullets!

The big thing I noticed with my Knight,is sabot goes down barrel very hard/tight.Knight tech told me 3yrs ago, thats a good thing. As far as groups go,I finally figured I was deforming bullet in attempt to get down barrel.A starter with a PLASTIC coned tip will almost eliminate bullet distortion on the start anyway.I started using plastic tip starter about 8 yrs ago.It improved groupS greatly on my T/C inline and CVA side lock.

I also bought a kit with various brass screw in tips. You screw proper tip on starter and the rod, depending on HP,Polymer or Spitzer tip bullet. If you buy the "Precision" spitzer or polymer tip sabots they come with a plastic tip you screw into rod.

All this might seem a bit Anal, but its the little things that can change a group from size of paper plate at 50-100yrds down to a silver dollar!

All this nit picky stuff greatly improved my groups in 3 differant smoke poles.

I'm sure one way or another you'll get your Knight tweaked the way you want it.Good Luck - AL

First thing I will say and prob. be critized for this--- if you are shooting pellets switch to powder. I have had a very hard time getting the pellets to shot very well in either of my knights. I have shot all different types of powder in my knight. We have three of them in the family right now and they all like the different bullets. Mine likes 120 grains of triple 7 with black thompson center sabots and hornady xtp 240 grain bullets. Odd combo but it will shoot 2 inch groups at 100 and touch at 50. Brothers likes 120 grains of clean shot with 250 grains barnes bullets and sabots. Fathers likes 120 grains of clean shot and 240 grain thompson center bullets and sabots. They look like hornady xtp bullets and may be. The one thing that all of these have in common is the sabot seems to be longer than the knight or hornady sabots. The sabot comes closer to the top of the bullet and for some reason all our guns like that. I picked a bullet and bought 5 different types of sabots kept changing until I got one that worked. All our guns like the top of the powder range better than anywhere else. 120 grains is top with loose powder. Good luck finding the right load is a pain with a muzzleloader but once it is done you will be the envy of your friends as they search.
