I have just brought home a new RMC .50 cal flintlock with a 1:28 barrel. I am lookingfor links to beginner muzzleloader site as I have no experience in black powder shooting. I am a bow hunter and want to primarly use the muzzleloader in the late season (after christmas).

I have never heard of a "beginner site" but if you will ask questions someone here will answer them. Lee

The RMC Flintlock is a nice rifle. I would suggest you try a load of Goex black powder as the basic charge and some Goex 3f or 4f as the prime charge.

That barrel is a fast twist Green Mountain Barrel Flintlock. If it is the one I am thinking of, some of them have a removable breech plug. The older AccuSporter does not. It will probably tune in around 100 grains of Goex 2f and a .430 diameter 300 grain HP-XTP or just a XTP made by Hornady. Start your load development at 80 grains and then start working upward from there.

Be sure to swab the barrel between shots. Use a lightly damp patch with isopropyl alcohol. Swab the barrel is short strokes, working from the muzzle to the breech and then back out. Flip that patch and do it again. Then run two or three dry patches after thatdamp one, in the same manner. Be sure the barrel is nice and dry before loading another sabot.

With a sharp flint and a good prime, you should get some excellent accuracy. I thought about buying one of them rifles with the laminated stock when RMC was selling off the AccuSporter that does not have the removable breech plug, but passed on the deal.

Thanks for the reply. AsI said, I am VERY new to this and will be looking for all the infoI can get. The shop I purchased the gun from sold me Triple Seven pellets and really wasn't a lot of help. I deal with them on the archery side and they are excellentfor that butI felt lost on this purchase. They didn't carry the black powder and recommended another shop for that. I stopped in there and was very happy with the info and time spent with me there. I will be using that shop for my black powder needs from now on.

I never heard of this muzzleloader so im really no help.

Seeing how it has a 1:28 twist, i'd give some 295 grain powerbelts a try.

My understanding is that the AccuSporter is able to shoot pellets but a word of advise.. after the pellets are gone, I would not replace them. Also for the time being, duplex your loads. With a powder measure, measure out about 20 grains of Black Powder in 2 or 3f If you have 4f as a primer then measure out 10 grains. Then slide the pellets in on top of that. What will happen is the loose powder will catch the spark from the frizzen and explode that under the pellet which will provide the fire necessary to set them off.

You will find a quicker ignition with pure black powder. And forget the pellets. For sabots, try some XTP in 300 grain, 250 grain Shockwaves, 250 or 300 grain Nosler, or one of the better quality sabot/bullet combinations out there. You should get excellent results...

Keep us posted as to how your rifle shoots. Some Thomas Fuller Black Powder Flints will work well in that rifle too.. I believe your hammer is a 5/8th but a 3/4 will also work. Measure your frizzen and the width of it will tell you the flint you need...

I almost bought that rifle also, since I hunt in PA FL season and it shoots sabots well. They are also beautiful guns, I talk to the people each year at the Eastern Outdoors Show in Harrisburg, very nice people. One of the best places for beginning info is here:

I shoot 300g Gold Dots with Crushed Rib sabots in my 1:48 TC Flintlock. Powerbeltswork, but I would shoot 348g, and only take "bow shots" with the PB, since they fragment with shoulder and bonehits. Do NOT shoot 3 pellets in the RMC, waste of powder, and kills your shoulder.

Powerbelts certainly do not fragment with shoulder shots. With all the shooting ive done this year, a tiny 225 grain powerbelt survives hard impact all the way up to 200 yards with no weight loss.
Only reason i used this 225 aerotip powerbelt for hunting was to test it out and see how it performed on game.

OK, shot about 30 rounds throughout the weekend and I realy like this ML thing. I decided to ditch the pellets and never even opened the package. Got some 2F Triple7 and both 243 Powerbelts and 250 shockwaves. They seemd to shoot about the same and any erratic shots I could chalk up to my severly lacking shooting discipline. I was hitting pretty well out to 100 yds, although@ 100 yds., I was not yet consistent. It is going to be fun (and expensive) learing this new weapon.
