Default NRA Tests Muzzleloader Propellants

Look at a copy of the NRA's Rifleman magazine for October, 07. Bryce M. Towlsey testedevery popular M/L propellant and some that are not popular. He used a Knight KRB rifle with a 27" barrel. The bullet in all tests was the Hornady 250 grain SST. Primer=Remington STS No. 209.

This was a very good and comprehensive test. i was surprised at the velocities obtained with Swiss B/P,1879 fps with a 100 grain load. This is also the first timei ever sawbarrel pressuredata for the variousM/L propellants. Pressures ran as high as 25,500 psi with 150 grains of Black Mag 3.

I'd like to see that data. What kind of velocity did he get with Triple Seven?

Triple Seven FFG gave:

100 grains: 1,961 fps.
150 grains:2,166 fps.

777 Pellets gave:

100 grains: 1,731 fps.
150 grains: 2,106 fps.

Two of the spiffy new TSM pellets gave 1,850 fps.

BTW: 777 and RS (both pellets and powder) gave thelowest standard deviation ofall propellants tested. 100 grains of 777 powder gave an SD of 10.An SD of 10is very hard to attain when reloading some centerfire calibers.

That's actually pretty good for the 777 pellets, & makes me glad to know this being that it is what I'm using in my Traditions Yukon.

Thanx for the info..
