I was just wondering what kinda powder to get triple 7 or pyrodex rs.Any advantages one way or another?? I live in North Dakota and it does get cold in muzzy seson. I know I want some loose powder, not the pellets

You could get a lot of different opinions on this,but after having tried them all I believe that real black powder and pyrodex are still the most reliable under extreme circumstances.Lee

My answer would depend on what kind of rifle & ignition system.
With an inline using 209 ignition about any powder on the market will light dependably. With a sidelock and #11 caps I'd stick with regular BP for hunting. Pyrodex would be my second choice. With any other powder I'd switch to musket caps or a 209 conversion nipple. (I have a few of Ben Hubbard's "mag-spark" conversion nipples and they work for lighting the new "replica"powders I've tried.)

Generally, if your shooting an inline... because of the extreme temperatures of North Dakota, I would stick with Pyrodex RS. If you have a traditional rifle, then black powder or Pyrodex RS. While Pyrodex RS is dirty, and you have to clean your rifle ASAPafter you shoot, it is a very consistant powder, good power, good & dependable in extreme weather. Black Powder is another good powder if you can get it. Again, very dirty, soft fowling, easy to ignite, and gives excellent accuracy most the time.

What kind of rifle are you shooting? If it is a sealed system like a Knight or T/C Omega, triple Se7en will work with a 209 primer in the cold. And actually I hunted northern Wisconsin last deer season with Triple Se7en 3f and #11 caps with no problems. But it never got bitter cold. Only in the teens a couple days.

One I am stuck in rut - I think T7 is the best powder out there for me... It allows me to have the option of when to clean - it is not near as corrosive as other powders + it is reliable and consistent.

And I gotta tell, hunting in cold weather is a normal thing here in northern Idaho.. 20 below is not unheard of and 80% of the time it is below freezing during the late ML season. In the inlines shooting T7 with a 209, a 25 acp, or 32 H&R mag conversion is not a problem. When I go to sidelocks in that weather I do switch powder to T7-3f and a Dynamit Noble 107+ cap. It works - just fine..... + if you are really concerned you can use theShockey trick and wrap a hand warmer on the barrelabove the breech to keep the powder warm.

T7 gets my vote...

I've been hunting with T7 fora few years now. Started in 2003 I think. I've hunted in rain, freezing rain, snow, and some downright cold weather that was below zero IIRC. Triple Seven has never failed me when I needed it. IMO it'sthe best powder currently on the market. It's only downside is the crud ring that sometimes happens. My Extreme doesn't crud though. The Omega used to crud bad till I switched to 25 ACP.

Just don't try the weaker 209 primers like Kleenbore, and WInchester T7 primers. You probably won't get reliable ignition. The regular Winchester primers work fine and IIRC they are what Knight recomends.

I only use #11 caps, and I've never had an ignitionproblemusing Pyrodex P or APP fffg during winter weather.
I always place a rubber balloon over my muzzle secured by a rubber band to keep moisture out, and once the gunhasgoneoutside, I leave it in a cold hallway to keep condensation from forming in the barrel.
Although once,after shooting a deer using Pyrodex and whiledragging it out, it started snowing. And when the moisture from the snowcame into contact with the Pyrodex residue on the unblued muzzle crown of my rifle, it did stain the unprotected steel which never came out using solvent.
Pyrodex P does burn a little cleaner and packs into the breech tighter,producing a little higher velocity.Lately I'm onlyusing APP fffg duringDecember deer season in CT.

Yeah we got late season here in ND also. Its the latter part of Nov. after the regular deer rifle season.It will be cold! Unless El Nino kicks in or something.Thanks for all the input.To all the southern hunters out there look out for snakes and dont let your deer rot.Just kidding
