If it is nickel and stained... you can try a lot of things to "brighten" it up but do not be surprised if nothing works. I have a Staghorn Magnum (last two serial numbers 03) and it has the nickel finish. In the breech it darkened and I have tried about everything under the sun to get that stain off.. and guess what? It still shoots great, stain and all.

I have a friend that hunts with a .54 caliber CVA Hunterbot. He shoots 80 grains of powder and a 300 grain REAL conical (I made him a bunch of them). He said at 50 yards it will knock the snot out of a whitetail. I shot his rifle one afternoon and I have to admit it was pretty accurate and fun to shoot.

I did not own an inline at that time my friend let me try his.. they were kind of new to the market, so I went out and purchased a .54 caliberTradition's E-bolt I think it was called. What a piece of junk that thing was. Sorry if I offended anyone but... Cock it and set it in the corner and suddenly it would just go off. Needless to say, it went back the next day, brand new, never been fired, cleaned of all grease rifle for a refund...

Good luck with your rifle. Nosler I think makes .54 caliber sabots that can take a .452 diameter projectile like a Hornady XTP 300 grain. That should shoot pretty good too. Does your rifle have the 1:28 or the 1:32 twist?

1in 32 twist. Are musket caps the same as 209 shotgun primers?

No, they are not. Musketcaps can be hard to find. If your CVA is like all the others that i have seen you can order a 209 primer breech plug from Cabela's for about $10.00. All you need to convert it is the breech plug.

So I just need to replace the breech plug and thats all? I dont need a different nipple or firing pin. And if I just need to replace the breech plug, what am I looking for? A breech plug for a cva in-line hunterbolt for 209 shotgun primer?

Also, what is the difference between musket caps and 209 shotgun primers. What am I gaining from a conversion. I've shot the gun with the musket caps and it was fine.

209 primers aremorepowerful than musket caps. If musket caps work every time then there is no problem keeping that system. My CVA Stag Horn would not lightPyrodex pellets reliably with musket caps: That cost me a huge buck when i had a long hang fire.

Actually in the inline rifles, when shooting loose powder even the simple #11 cap will work just fine for igniton. In my neck of the woods, musket caps are still easy to find. Contact CVA and aske them if they still will sell you the musket and #11 breech plugs for about $15.00 and shipping. I got them when my Staghorn was new.

209 primers are easy to find, but even the stores are getting smart and trying to make more money off us. Those things have gone through the roof in price in some places. I used to get them for $2.99 a pack and now they want $5.99. Like I told the fellow at the store, this is getting crazy.

If your breach plug is the same as the one for my Magbolt it has a musket nipple screwed into the breach plug. With that BP all you need to do to convert to #11's is to replace the nipple with a #11 nipple. As far as converting to 209's,I wouldcontact CVA and ask about the 209 BP (it does not use a nipple). The last time I contacted them they sent me a BP with no questions asked and I didn't even have to pay shipping. It's worth an email or phone call. BTW, it sounds like you came across a good deal.

All you need is the 209 breech plug to convert that gun to use 209 primers. Cabela's has it for about $10.00.
