Some very good points made by all. I've killed 6 deer with powerbelts and I've personally never had a problem with them. But on the other hand I've had friends that has. If you read enough and beleive what other people have done there is not a hunting bullet that has not failed one time or another. My own experience with the big lead 460grn bullshop bullet last year on a cow with the Ultra Mag is this. Alot of people are saying you should probably use somewhere in the 100-110grns of powder for effective killing power with the big bullets. I disagree I used 80grns of Pyrodex P and the cow was ranged with a finder at 154 yards the bullet did not exit but it penetrated and held together perfectly. My velocity was around 1200-1250if I remember correct. I live about 25 miles from the guy who makes the No-Excuses bullets. I've talked to him a few times and he says the same thing these big bullets dont have to be pushed in the 1400-1500 range to be effective on animals up to moose which he has seen quite few killed with his bullets at modest speed. If you feel comfortable and your accuracy is there with a 100 to 110grns great but dont feel undergunned with these big bullets with 70,80 and 90grns of your favorite powder. I promise you the old 45-70 killed more than just buffalo with a 45grn bullet and 70grns of black powder. Accuracy is the greatest killer on any animal and I dont think anybody would argue with that. My 2 cents.

I don't know about any other MLer, but with the U-M, shooting the heavy load is not that bad on recoil. Sabotloader witnessed me shoot a few 620 gr Bullshops on top of 100 gr of 777 last year. I was a little hesitant at first, but it wasn't bad at all. My pre-64 Model 70 30-06 is much worse. But, it does have a steel butt plate. |

Earlier on my post, when I said accuracy was the greatest killer I am talking about shot placement. Just dont want to confuse anybody.

ORIGINAL: gleason.chapman ORIGINAL: Redclub I shoot Barnes originals out of a Savage ,300 grain/458 dia. over 60 grains of vv120 and that is one heck of a long range shooter. Thanks Chap The Barne's original is a 45-70 rifle bullet it has an exposed lead tip Its been around forever. I use the MMP orange sabot. This bullet has to be pushed as its very tough and needs some speed to open up. I never recovered one from a deer as they always go thru. I have shot a few out of a White and they are very accurate but never shot an animal with that load. Redclub |
