Default My New Omega

Hi all I am new to this forum, and I have recently purchased a T/C Omega, Realtree stock and SS barrel, and I just can not seem to get the groups down. At one hundred yards with two 50 grain pellets and the Hornady 300 grain XTP sabots it will throw about 4 inch pattern and that is not satisfactory for me. I tried the 295 grain Powerbelts with the same powder charge and it throw about a 2 inch pattern but the bullets were tumbling. I have just bought some 777 and have some 240 grain Hornady sabots that I am going to try this weekend. I am planning on starting at 90 grains and going up in 10 grain increments with three shot groups till I find the load that works. Does anybody have any other suggestions? I have also read on this forum that a lot of Omega’s were hard to load after the second shot. I had no trouble with mine but I also ran a brush through it after every shot. Plus I swabed it with a wet mop swab. That seems to help.

What rate of twist does the barrel have? If it is faster than 1 in 28 then you will probably need to use a long, heavy bullet to get good flight. I have been reading many different articles and reviews on this and they all are saying pretty much the same thing, 1 in 28 to 1 in 32 are about ideal in a 45 and 50 caliber muzzle loaders. If it is a fast rate of twist, they have said that they can get decent flight with moderate to light loads and light bullets. Good luck!

Yes it is a 1 in 28". I also have some 300 grain barns sabots to try as well. I have heard some good stories about the barns.

I am going to try the black powder after i see the results from the 777. I am hoping that the 777 will help allot. For next season i will probably use the precision QT 250 grain 40cal bullets. I plain on purchasing the assortment pack with bullet weight ranging from 235 to 250 grains. I should be able to find a good diet for my Omega.

Try a patch lightly dampened with Windex after each shot, up and down the bore in short strokes and then turn it over and repeat.

I have never heard of using the Windex. What does that do to the guns finish in the bore? With the ammonia in the Windex does that not strip the seasoning out of the metal?

What seasoning? That aint a cast iron skillet. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I believe you can get Windex that has no ammonia. Or just use aclohol

I went to the range last weekend and did some more tests. I started with 90 grains of t7 and the hornady 240grain. I had the same results as the 300 grain bullets. Next I tried the barns. The barns clover leafed with the same 90 grain of t7. My brother has never had any good groups out of his cva but last weekend he tried the barns with two 50 grain pellets and he put five in the bulls eye. Impressed the heck out of me. Next he tried the precision qt .40 cal 240 grain with two pellets. He put 4 in the same hole about .5 inch group. I haven’t tried the precision bullets yet but I am planning on it this weekend.

littlemac, another saboted bullet you might want to try is the White Powerstar from splitfireguns.com . Amazing results in my .45 Encore and I think they would do well in an Omega as well. I would go with the heavier one for .50s.
Congrats on finding those good loads. I've got some 300 grain Hornady XTPs and appropriate black sabots to try in my Omega (when the snow melts and this stomach virus lets go of me).
