Default Just another dumb question??

I own a CVA Firebolt Ultra mag 209 and I was wondering one day what kind of tweaks I can safely do to make it an all around ML.It's already shoots sub 1" groups at 150 yards but I want to shoot groups like that at 175-200 yards I know it can be accomplished but I know I'm going to have to tweak it up a little to make it happen.Any tricks of the trade would be incredably appreciated.

BAYONETS: NEXT STEP WOULD BE TO GLASS-BED THE ACTION AND FULL FREE FLOAT THE BARREL.

how do you glass-bed the action and full free float the barrel? Or is this just a nasty prank!!!

No prank. Glass (and other types of materials, like aluminum blocks) bedding and free floating the barrel are two common steps that can be taken to improve the accuracy of a rifle (in fact, most bolt-action CF rifles today are already free-floated and bedded by the manufacturer).

They are two separate things, but are typically done at the same time.

Glass bedding involves lining any surfaces on the stock that contact the action with a fitted layer of fiberglass, which strengthens and stiffens the stock and guarantees the same stock to action fit and support every shot. Bedding the action can also be done by supporting the action with aluminum blockes imbedded into the stock.

Free floating the barrel involves removing stock material from under the barrel so that no part of the stock touches the barrel, resulting in a slight gap between these two parts. From what I have read about free-floating is that it doesn't actually directly improve groups, as it allows the barrel to vibrate more when fired which can actually open up groups unless the proper ammo is used. A barrel fully and evenly supported by the stock from all sides that served to dampen the occillations of the barrel would be optimum, but not easily achieved. What it does do is remove the stock from the equation, as even slight shifts in stock to barrel pressure can effect the point of impact of the round (such things as shooting off a rest on the front of the stock vs. hand held in the middle or changes in temperature and humidity). Free-floating is a compromise between the possiblility of slightly larger groups to ensure consistant point-of-aim/point-of-impact so the rifles zero doesn't change as much with ambient conditions.

Glass bedding a muzzleloader is a possibility and should be no harder than bedding any bolt-action style rifle. Free floating can be a little more problematic for a couple of reasons. First is that pesky ramrod that we have to carry around. Most MLs support the ramrod with both the stock and the barrel, defeating the purpose. To be done right the ramrod would either have to be carried separately or the stock modified to support and retain the ramrod fully. The second problem is if your ML had a molded synthetic stock with no internal support down the length of the fore-end. Most synthetic stocks are very flexible and would require a lot of material removed to prevent contact with the barrel, which would further weaken the stock. This would make it nescessary to reinforce the stock to prevent bending & flexing. This problem is being addressed now by CF rifle manufacturers by using "lay-up" synthetics stocks and/or by running an aluminum bar down the length of the stock to strengthen it.

Good Luck,

Mike

sub 1" groups at 150 yards????????? Don't do a thing to that gun. In fact, don't breath on it. I would love to see that thing shoot sub1" groups at 150 yards. I hear people say that all the time, but everytime I go to the range with them, they are having a bad day, or they swear it did this last week, and don't know whats wrong now. Or in all truthfulness, they got that group once, and usually it gets 3 to 4" groups. I am not saying thats you, but I wish I could own a gun like that. Thats incredible groups that 95% or more muzzleloaders can't accomplish. Wish mine shot like that.

Bigcountry is right. That's about as good as it gets. Don't mess it up.

I agree with bigcountry and 1950KID, Sub 1" groups with a ML...don't touch it!
