How far can the range be with a 1:48 twist using a conical and a full charge? What is a full charge? 100?
My state, Idaho, may be is switching to new regulations for ML hunting one of the new rules is the projectile must be all lead and 10/1000 of bore diameter. Becuae of this I am now shooting full bore conicals with open sights.

I have been doing a lot of shooting with both Bull Shop and No Excuses 460 grain conicals. I never in the world thought I would shoot bullet that big and that slow, but rules are rules.

I have really been impressed with these two projectiles. I am shooting two different TC guns, one is a concockution... I have a fast twist 1/28 twist GM LRH SS barrel now mounted in a Renegade stock and I have a real Renegade with a short 27" 1/48 twist barrel. I expected the the 1/28 to shoot the conicals well and I was experimenting with the 1/48 because I did not think it would stabilize that long of a bullet... ah gees... does Colorado have the 2 times the bore rule? If it does the 460 will not work, but Bull Shop makes a 400 grain that will. Anyway the 1/48 shoots right along with the GM barrel. I feel I have really been fortunate as I can set clay pigeons up at various ranges from 75 to 120 (that is the farthest) I have tried this and pick them off. Have to change the hold slightly but not that much. The conical is not a flat shooter but it really does better than I ever thought it would.

I shoot 90 grains of T7-3f in the GM barrel and 80 grains in the TC Renegade. I do not know if I mentioned these are both 50 cal barrels. I am really happy with these. There are a few post in the forum that I have posted that show what I have been doing. If you would like to see let me know and I will find them for you.

Under or IN the right circumstances and especially at an elk - I would not hestistate a 150 yard shot... the energy and accuracy isthere...

Here is a ballistic chart for my guns... I think this is from the 1/28 twist barrel it is longer and gives me a bit more velocity + it is shooting 90 grains vs 80...

Sabotloader,
Are you sure about the NE 460 being over the 2x length? It would have to be over 1" for a 50 cal and I think the ones I have are less than that, somewhere around .9". That would be legal in CO.

I have very little experience with traditionals. If it were me I would just opt for the .50 but these guys know their stuff so you should listen to them.

You know I am not sure... Cdad measured one but now that I think about it - it might have been a 600 grain Bull Shop..

I am gonna go mic both a Bull Shop and NE right now and find out. With our new regs (Idaho) there is not a length requirement so it ws a non-issue for me...

You are correct - both the NE and the 460 grain Bull Shop measure .968

Bein out in colorado where you have the chance to go after bigger game like elk would eliminate the 50. go with the 54, bigger ball+more powder= more knock down power

I am starting to save up some dough and sell off a few things to buy a hawken precussion rifle. I have access to a 209 inline for this season (deer and maybe elk) but I would like to get a hawken kit. Would you all reccomend a 54 over a 50 or does bullet advancements negate the need for a little more? I live in colorado, no pyrodex pellets, no sabots, and no scopes allowed. SO, fire away! EJ
Deer only, .50 is OK-even with nothing but a round ball. Butdeer & elk, etc., .54 is better!

Sabotloader, I measured one of my 500 grain and even they come in under an inch. So if that is all that is required, they also would be legal.

We do not have the length stipulation (yet) but some states do. Some states are 2 times the bore and I think Oregon out here has a rule of 1.5 times bore.

It is interesting that the 500 is under an inch... I know you and I think Cdad like the 500 - In your view, what is the difference in it that makes it better than the 460?

Both of them shoot real well in the White. The 500 grain just a little better. Also I am always under the impression that the more energy I can push into a animal, the more shock and damage I can do to plant them where they stand. At close ranges, even with less velocity to the conical the 500 grain just has a tiny bit more energy then the 460. Not enough to probably make a difference. So what ever shoots best is what gets my attention. I shoot both in the White with 70 grains of Triple Se7en and both do just fine.
