"And the Warden was telling me of the damage and destruction these hogs do in the woods. He said he hopes everyone of them dies off in the winter, which of course they do not. A large hog population I was told can turn into a nightmare of sorts for some landowners."
In Comanche county, OK there are many thousands of hogs. Most of them areEuropean boars. Used to work in the area where i hunt. It was not unusual for the hogs to come in over night and root up two or three acres of grass. They intimidate the deer and will sometimes chase them off the game plots. They root up the areas around gullies and streams causing much soil erosion. They eat up the acorns, when there are acorns. You should see what 20 or so hogs can do to a farmers wheat field overnight.
Coyotes, even in a pack, cannot deal with a couple of mature hogs. It is not unusual to see a coyote that is crippled from fighting with a hog. These boars that we have here will squeal and here comes the cavalry in the form of more hogs to fight the coyotes.
These boars are smart. Learned a lot from friends who hunted them in Europe. When a herd of boars are coming into a pond or a game plot it is not unusual for the bigboars to force a younger pig to the front to act as scout. In late September i heard them coming in, there was some loud squealingand here came thescout running to the pond:The little guywas terrified, with the hair standing up on his back.
